INDONESIAN STARTUPS STAND OUT IN BUSAN

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Sept 29 (Antara) - Even as Jakarta plays host to the digital forum IDByte 2017 Conference, several Indonesian firms have started flexing their muscles by introducing their digital solutions at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Busan, South Korea.
Opening the IDByte 2017 Conference in Jakarta, Thursday, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the government would help startup companies conduct experiments and create innovations through the use of digital technology.
The startup companies can be supported if Indonesian entrepreneurs build a local brand by utilizing the advances in communications technology, he said. The president's call was aimed at encouraging them to grasp digital technology solutions.
In terms of digital solutions, many Indonesian startups have begun to make progress. In South Korea, for example, several Indonesian startups showed off their digital solutions at the ITU forum in Busan from Sept. 26 to 28, 2017.
The startups representing Indonesia that were invited by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics to participate in the event included Tokopedia, Modalku, Tukang Sayur.co, Cashlez, Nurbaya Initiative and Gerakan Nasional 1.000 Startup Digital (National Movement of 1,000 Digital Startups).

Indonesian Telecommunication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara said that the startup representatives at the ITU event were the best practitioners of digital solutions, who were able to integrate synergies that support the development of small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), and improve the welfare of the community through the implementation of shared economy, workforce digitalization and financial inclusion.
Meanwhile, CEO and Co-Founder of Nurbaya Initiative Kiki Rizki said he was grateful for the opportunity given by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Informatics to represent Indonesia at the ITU Telecom World 2017 event in Busan.
He hoped the synergy would help and inspire the startup colleagues to realize 'Indonesia: The Digital Energy of Asia' event.
Nurbaya Initiative and Tukang Sayur.co (vegetable vendors) have a common vision, which is in line with the goal of advancing native Indonesian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and enabling workforce digitalization.
Both startups narrated their success stories in providing a digital platform to help typical Indonesian SME players and vegetable vendors to meet and deal directly with their customers.
Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Tukang Sayur.co Farry Argoebie said that through the application, people could order fresh vegetables and get them delivered directly to their door. This is a solution for urban families, who do not have enough time to shop in the market or wait at a vegetable market.
Co-Founder and CEO of Modalku Iwan Kurniawan said that SMEs needed venture capital, but the majority of them did not get it, because of inefficient market or unsuitable product.
Here Modalku plays a vital role by providing access to free collateral capital loans through an "online" process, which is easy and quick, thus advancing the Indonesian economy.
Modalku is a startup that is active in the field of peer-to-peer lending and connects SMEs that need working capital loans with lenders who are looking for attractive investment alternatives.
Cashlez is a payment technology company that creates the mPOS system, a concept for receiving credit card- and debit card-based application payments on smartphones (android and iOS), which are then connected to a card reader via Bluetooth.
"Startup companies should not be hampered by excessive regulations," President Widodo had remarked, when opening the IDByte 2017 Conference in Jakarta, Thursday.
The president has urged a number of ministers, related to the economy and technology, to support business innovation through the use of digital technology. He has asked the public to further expand the trade of locally made goods through the use of electronic trade, or "e-dagang."
"The internet has indeed made the distance less relevant, but it does not mean that the location has lost its importance. Location or local uniqueness still has its own importance and role," the President noted.

He believed that the people should utilize several electronic transaction applications, such as Paypal and Alipay, to simplify the payment process for the trade of local products.
The use of such applications can also boost the competitiveness of Indonesian products at the global level through the internet. Indonesia is a large market for local products.
There is a huge market for local products, and with the passage of time, e-commerce corporations will continue to grow, and our products will penetrate regional and even global markets.
Hence, Indonesia needs to adapt itself to the advancements in communication technology, including electronic trade. Technological advancements cannot be contained, and if Indonesia refuses to stay abreast, it will lose its competitiveness in the global trade scene, President Jokowi said. ***3***(a014/INE/B003)EDITED BY INE
