Jakarta, Oct 26 (Antara) - With an inflation rate of below four percent, Indonesia is demonstrating a sound economic development trend wherein its growth rate is expected to reach some five percent in 2018 and 2019.
However, the positive trend should be supported by other sectors, such as energy, so that economic development could be maintained on the right track.Hence, Montty Girianna, a deputy for energy management of the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs, reminded that Indonesia needed to increase its energy productivity to support the country's economic performance. "Indonesia needs to continue to strive to increase productivity, including in the energy sector. The government should ensure its availability and the affordability of its consumers," Girianna stated in Jakarta on Tuesday (Oct 23). In this case, the government continues to offer business investment opportunities to companies, so that it can increase the potentials of the country's depleting energy resources. To this end, one of the steps that the government can take is to provide more convenient business facilities and investment attractiveness in the energy sector. |

GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO DEVELOP RENEWABLE ENERGY
by Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, April 13 (Antara) - The energy sector is one of the crucial fields that has been instrumental in driving economic activities and boosting growth in the country.
Today, energy is no longer merely a commodity but has served as a driving force for economic development. Hence, to replace the depleting conventional energy sources, the Indonesian government is going all out to exploit its new and renewable energy potential. With the shift in paradigm from energy as a commodity to energy as a driver, economic growth must be complemented with reforms in the oil and gas industry. "We are now working hard to attract as many investors as possible to work jointly with us in conducting exploration activities, increasing production, and developing energy infrastructure," Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Archandra Tahar noted in Jakarta on Thursday (Apr 12). Indonesia is confident of being able to exploit more of its renewable energy in future, with its measured program to achieve its energy mix targets. "Indonesia should ensure it still has the opportunity to enjoy more than what it is having today, " Tahar stated at a workshop on the energy sector. |

INDONESIA MUST HAVE CLEAR CONCEPT TO GO GREEN
By Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, Feb 19 (Antara) - The Indonesian government is committed to developing environment-friendly energy as part of its efforts to go green and achieve a target of 23 percent renewable energy mix by 2025.
Development efforts in Indonesia must implement the Green Development or Green Economy concepts, which are in essence friendliness to the environment. However, the government should have a clear concept to achieve this target.According to legislator Irawan Pasaribu of the House of Representatives' (DPR's) Commission VII on environment affairs, the government must have a clear work plan to realize the target of utilizing green energy or renewable energy by 23 percent by 2025. "One of the efforts that should be made is to support the development of new and renewable energy in potential areas such as West Sumatra," he said during a working visit to Padang, provincial capital of West Sumatra, on Monday. Currently, according to him, the percentage of energy utilization is only about 12.5 percent, still far from the target of 23 percent. Virtually, the government has been successful in achieving and exceeding its renewable energy mix target in 2017, after it failed to reach the environment-friendly energy target in 2015 and 2016. |

GOVT EXCEEDS ITS RENEWABLE ENERGY MIX TARGET
by Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, Jan 10 (Antara) - The government has been successful in achieving and exceeding its renewable energy mix target in 2017 after it failed to reach the environment-friendly energy target in 2015 and 2016.
The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry said the realization of the new and renewable energy (EBT) mix program exceeded the target set in the revised state budget in 2017.Public Information and Cooperation Service Head of the ESDM Agung Pribadi said in Jakarta on Sunday (Jan 7) that the increase in the energy mix production took place not only with the power plants developed by state-owned power company PLN but also with plants built by independent power producers (IPP). "The realization of the EBT energy mix produced by power plants until November 2017 reached 12.52 percent, exceeding the target set in the Revised 2017 State Budget (APBNP) 11.96 percent. The main portion of the increase came from the hydro power plants (PLTA) and geothermal plants (PLTP)," he said. In 2016, the government set renewable energy mix target at 10.4 percent but it only achieved 7.7 percent of renewable energy portion. The success to achieve the target is a good indication that the government could achieve its target to reach renewable energy mix of 23 percent by 20125. |

GOVERNMENT'S ENERGY MIX PROGRAM NEEDS SUPPORT
By Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, Dec 12 (Antara) - Many countries, including Indonesia, are now increasingly developing new and renewable energy (EBT), which is safe for the environment and is a promising source of energy for the future.
Indonesia expects that energy diversification utilizing renewable natural resources will help in its endeavor to accelerate its energy mix program and help reduce its greenhouse gas emission. It wants renewable sources to contribute to 23 percent of the country's energy mix by 2025. Indonesia has also pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent by 2030. After all, Indonesia is rich in renewable sources, which could be developed to increase its energy mix and gas emission reduction programs. Indonesia is rich in biopower, geothermal, hydropower, ocean energy, solar, and wind energies. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) has recorded the total renewable energy potential in Indonesia to reach 441.7 gigawatts (GW). Based on data from the Directorate General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the ESDM, of the 441.7 GW, only two percent, or 8.8 GW, has been used so far. The government has devised various strategies to attain the EBT target of 23 percent by 2025. In the geothermal field, for example, the ESDM has issued Regulation No. 36 on Preliminary Survey Assignment Procedure (PSP) and Preliminary Survey Assignment and Exploration (PSPE). |

GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES RESEARCH TO TAP OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY
by Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, Sept 25 (Antara) - Indonesia, believed to have the largest source of ocean thermal energy, is conducting a research to tap it for the welfare of its people.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia has the world's largest ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) potential found in at least 17 locations across the country. This was revealed by Head of Center for Research and Development of Marine Geology (P3GL) of the ESDM Ediar Usman in a written statement received by Antara in Jakarta on Sunday. According to Usman, the potential of ocean thermal energy in Indonesia's maritime territory is forecast to have the capacity to generate some 240 gigawatts (GW) of electricity. The Flores waters in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) are one of the regions having OTEC potential. Hence, the ESDM is deploying the P3GL research ship Geomarin III to conduct a survey on evaluating sea temperatures in Flores in the north of Pulau Lembata Island of NTT Province. The Geomarin III research ship will conduct the survey from September 24 to October 7, 2017. The results obtained from evaluating sea temperatures will serve as a basis for deciding further expansion work and investment in electrical energy, which will be produced from the OTEC potential. Indonesia has the largest OTEC potential in the world, as it is situated on the equator. The OTEC potential is scattered in the western coast of Sumatra, southern Java, Sulawesi, North Maluku, Bali, and NTT. |

INDONESIAN GOVT PRIORITIZES RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT
By Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta,
March 27 (Antara) - The Indonesian Government is focusing on the
development of renewable energy and other alternative sources in the
face of the depletion of its fossil-based fuel energy reserves.
In an effort to develop alternative sources and renewable energy, the
government is turning its attention to developing, among other factors,
solar energy and energy from processed urban wastes, industrial refuse,
vegetables, and plantations.Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Sudirman Said has stated that the government will seriously implement its program to produce renewable energy from vegetables. "The program to generate renewable energy from vegetables is one of our priorities. We hope the mandatory program can generate 1.57 million kiloliters of energy from vegetable wastes," the minister said recently. According to Said, President Joko Widodo has put forth an idea for managing displaced land in Indonesia. "Displaced land should be made use of for the green diesel development program by opening energy plantations at those locations," he stated. The minister further noted that extraordinary support will be needed from the government, private sector, and farmers to expedite the green diesel development program. Besides exploring and implementing energy generation programs, the government has also issued a policy raising its mandatory biofuel mix of diesel from 10 percent (B10) to 15 percent (B15). |

RI HAS GEOTHERMAL, URANIUM AS FUTURE ENERGY SOURCES
By Andi Abdussalam | |
Jakarta, Dec 5 (ANTARA) - Indonesia suffers from an annual deficit of
300 million barrels of oil and natural gas, as it needs 350 million
barrels but produces only 50 million.
Experts, however, say Indonesia is rich in geothermal power and
uranium, both of which can serve as alternative sources of energy."Since the year 2000, less than 50 million barrels of oil and natural gas has been produced annually. This runs short of the national demand of 350 million barrels. Therefore, we run short of 300 million barrels every year," said Rovicky Dwi Putrohari, the chairman of the Indonesian Geologists Association, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday. As Indonesia's oil reserves are declining, experts suggest that the country begin exploiting its other sources of energy, such as geothermal and uranium, apart from coal, hydropower, wind, biomass, solar energy, and others. After all, Indonesia has vast reserves of geothermal energy, accounting for 40 percent of the world's geothermal energy reserves. |

RI STEPPING UP ENERGY COOPERATION WITH OTHER COUNTRIES
By Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, Dec 16 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is new stepping up cooperation in the energy sector with many countries in the face of growing energy shortages at home and progressive depletion of its energy resources. Based on a study, Indonesia is predicted to become an energy importer by 2030 and in this case the government is urged to save on energy and strive to achieve self-reliance in the energy sector. "The prediction is based on the results of a study by the Energy Resources Development Technology Center (PTPSD) of the National Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT). the agency's chief Marzan Aziz Iskandar, said on Wednesday. In the face of shortage of energy, the Indonesian government is now stepping up and offering cooperation on energy, particularly renewable energy, to many countries such as Germany, the United States, China, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. According to legislator Arif Budimanta, a member of the House's Commission XI on financial affairs, there was an urgent need for the government to save on energy and develop self-reliance in the energy sector. This was a task that should be addressed immediately. Moreover, it is predicted that domestic energy production would no longer be able to meet domestic need in 2030. "Domestic need for energy will increase rapidly to 4.2 times the volume in 2009 and domestic production will only increase 2 times its present figure," Marzan of the BPPT said. Marzan said in 2030 it was expected that Indonesia's energy imports would reach 1.05 billion equivalent to barrels of oil. The imports will be composed of 57 percent fuel oils, 36 percent crude, 6.8 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and a small volume of coal. "But the country's energy and renewable energy production in 2030 is estimated at 524 million equivalent to barrel oil, or an increase by 12.4 times from the present condition," he said Most of the funds were used for energy imports. "We have to import a large volume of energy," he said. He said that as energy resources were very limited it should be economized and the government should save on energy and build self-reliance in the energy sector. In this case, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said here on Monday that Indonesia and China which had a big population were seeking to cooperate on renewable energy to anticipate the depletion of fossil energy resources. "It is important for the two countries to develop renewable energy in the face of declining fossil energy resources. After all, China has relatively advanced technology on renewable energy, such as technology on the utilization of solar and hydro energy," the minister said. The minister expressed his hope that the two countries would respectively set up a team to follow up on the results of a meeting between him and a Chinese delegation which was led by Cao Jialin, deputy technology minister at the Chinese Science and Technology Ministry. Besides, Indonesia and the Unite States will also step up cooperation in improving the investment climate in renewable energy like what has already been stated in a dialogue between the two countries. "We wish to improve the investment climate in the two countries to invite the private sector and seek new opportunities," economic coordinating deputy minister for economic cooperation and international financing Rizal Affandi Lukman said after meeting a delegation of US businessmen in Jakarta last week. "In the investment climate symposium in Bali we have invited Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Hong Kong whose business facilities had already been raised significantly in the last five year," he said. With regard to South Korea, Forestry Ministry Secretary General Hadi Daryanto said that there were three Korean investors who had been given permits by the ministry to develop timber estates and a wood pellet factory with a production capacity of about 40,000 tons. "The Korean investors needed large lands for their investment. The proposals that have been tabled cover 200,000 hectares and the ministry has approved 140,000 hectares with an investment of Rp6 trillion," he said. In addition, Rizal Affandi Lukman said that Indonesia and the United States would also increase cooperation in clean and renewable energy to meet the needs of the environmentally friendly green industry. "We propose the US to assist in realizing the green industry road map towards meeting an environmentally friendly industry, and we are now realizing the stages of its formulations," he said. Not only that, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has also invited Germany to cooperate on the energy sector. After all, German investment in Indonesia currently still totaled around 300 million US dollars, which according to the head of state still could be increased. "However, the amount could be increased further," Yudhoyono said in a joint press conference with visiting German President Christian Wulff, at Merdeka Palace, early this month. Yudhoyono invited Germany to become a strategic partner for the projects of the Indonesian Economic Development Expansion and Acceleration Masterplan (MP3EI). He also expressed his hope for the transfer of health technology from Germany. He also hoped that more Indonesian young people could have opportunities to study technologies in Germany. In this case Christian Wulff said his country offered around 400 scholarships for Indonesians to study in Germany. Germany was interested in establishing cooperation with Indonesia in the sector of energy friendly to the environment, the Garman president said. "Indonesia is the lung of the world, and we very much hope that Indonesia manages its forest properly," he said.***5*** |

RI HAS LOW SOVEREIGNTY OVER ENERGY
by Andi Abdussalam |
Jakarta, Nov 28 (ANTARA) - Once an oil exporting country, Indonesia is now rated as an importer one which has low sovereignty over its energy where foreign countries can enjoy relative liberty in tapping its energy resources. This is one of the opinions raised by speakers at a seminar on "Energy Resilience and Sovereignty In the Perspective of National Resilience" in Jakarta on Monday. The lack of sovereignty for Indonesia over its energy is a result of an energy paradigm inherited from the New Order government. "Talking about energy, the important thing is to change the old paradigm. Indeed, energy is a matter involving the sovereignty of the state," Deputy House Speaker Pramono Anung said. Therefore, the government should change the energy management paradigm it has inherited if the country's energy sources are to be preserved. "This paradigm has been applied since the New Order government and we are now facing its carry-over problems. For this, we need new people such as Pak (Mr) Dahlan to change this paradigm," Pramono said. Dahlan Iskan who was also a speaker at the seminar is the minister for state enterprises who is expected to advance state firms in the energy sector. He had earlier said that the government should develop five energy sectors in order to achieve national energy resilience, namely gas, geothermal, solar power , coal and nuclear. "The five aspects will be able to fulfill the country's energy resilience in the long run if they are developed based on the government's general energy principles." Dahlan told the national seminar. Unfortunately, so far national energy policy has not yet been aimed at preserving energy sources. This could be seen from the great liberty outsiders enjoyed in tapping Indonesia's natural wealth. Thus, according to Pramono, national energy resilience would only be a dream if the people did not realize the importance of energy. He said that North Korea, for example, had based its energy policies on its sovereignty. Energy was placed as a matter of state sovereignty where the state would base what it would do about energy on its sovereignty. The same was true in Cuba, he said, where people use energy in a frugal way as they realized the importance of energy. The price of fuel oil in Cuba was the same as in Indonesia. Yet, Cuba never felt it was running short of energy. "The United States which needs 30 million barrels of oil per day, does not use its own energy but imports it. It does not use even a single drop of its fuel oil, even if it could tap it from its own oil fields in Texas," Pramono said. Yet, former lawmaker Permadi said it was difficult for Indonesia to use and develop its energy sources for the benefit of the people while many of those sources were controlled by foreign companies. In fact, Indonesian workers including those of state oil and gas company Pertamina were able to manage energy sources on their own, yet sources were controlled by foreign firms. "How can we become master in our own home if many of Pertamina's competent workers are made to remain mere spectators," he said. LEMHANAS Governor Budi Susilo Soepandji said that based on information from various sources, Indonesia's energy supply and demand situation is quite precarious. The use of renewable energy sources and the implementation of energy conservation programs had not yet been optimal, he said in a paper titled "Energy Resilience and Sovereignty In the Perspective of National Resilience. Energy consumption which was growing by an average of 7 percent per year is not accompanied by adequate energy supply. The country's dependence on fossil-based energy was still high, accounting for 95.21 percent of its overall energy needs, he said. Therefore according to Dahlan Iskan, the government should change its pattern of fuel oils (BBM) consumption because oil production continued to drop while gas production continued to increase. In such a situation, commercial vehicles should no longer use fuel oils but compressed natural gas (CNG), or electricity. "Trucks must be directed to use CNG and motorcycles electricenergy," the minister said. Apart from that, Dahlan said. in order to overcome the shortage of power supply during the peak burden, the gas allocation for PLN should be increased. He said that in order to overcome the problem of high power demand during the peak burden, PLN was now building mini CNGs throughout Indonesia and was now in trial test in Jambi.***5*** |
