INDONESIA PREPARING SECURITY MEASURES FOR ASIAN GAMES

by Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Feb 14 (Antara) - Indonesia, which will be receiving about 3,200 athletes and officials from more than 40 countries, is preparing measures to ensure security when it hosts the biggest Asian sporting events next September.
Indonesia will organize the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and South Sumatran Province's capital city of Palembang from Sept 18 to Aug 2, 2018.
In order to provide security for foreign guests, the Indonesia Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee  (INASGOC) will involve more than 30 thousand police personnel in four Regional Police Divisions. "The number of personnel to be deployed will be in accordance with security needs, including security in the game fields and non-match arena such as the athletes' homesteads and hotels," Deputy IV of INASGOC Senior Commissioner Unggul Sedyantoro, stated in Jakarta on Tuesday (Feb 13).
The four regional police divisions which will be involved in securing the implementation of the Asian Games in August are Polda Metro Jaya (Jakarta Regional Police), South Sumatra Regional Police, West Java Regional Police, and Banten Regional Police.

In addition to police personnel, INASGOC is also working with TNI (Indonesian Defense Forces) Headquarters related to the security of the Asian Games, especially the Army Women's Corps, Women's Corps of the Navy, and the Air Force Women's Corps.
"We need female personnel to assist the committee's Arrival Department with the security of VIP Asian Games guests." Women personnel from both the Police and the TNI have been trained to guide important guests, so that it will be easier to adjust," Sedyantoro, who served in the Traffic Corps of the National Police (Polri) Headquarters, noted.
He added that INASGOC's main concern was to secure matches and traffic in football arenas located in Bekasi, Bogor, and Bandung (West Java). "We hope the football athletes can stay around the match arena, because the roads from Wisma Kemayoran Athlete House to the football stadium have a lot of sections that needs improvement," he revealed.
The police officer added that road security around Gelora Bung Karno Sports Stadium Area (GBK) Senayan, Jakarta, will be done by securing the left lanes around GBK. "The point that we have to anticipate traffic jam is in front of the FX Sudirman (shopping center) and in front of the Sultan Hotel," he explained.
Earlier on Jan 31, Vice President Jusuf Kalla visited the main operation control room of the INASGOC at Wisma Serbaguna, GBK Complex, Senayan.
During his visit, Kalla revealed that the control room will be used to monitor the overall implementation of the upcoming 2018 Asian Games. "Whether it is the match, the transportation, the venue, and the readiness of the athletes, everything can be controlled from this room," Kalla was quoted as saying by tempo.co online media after visiting the operating room.
He added that the control room will not only be able to control the activities in Senayan and surrounding areas but also all coverage areas that have links with the 2018 Asian Games, such as from the airports to Wisma Athletes house.
In the coming major Asian sporting events,  Indonesia sets a target to become one of the top ten.  Indonesia  was ranked 17th on the medals tally in the 17th Asian Games 2014 among 37 participating countries in Incheon, South Korea, with four gold medals, five silver and 11 bronze medals.
China was on the top of the list with 151 gold, 108 silver and 83 bronze medals. China had been the overall champion for nine times in a row since the 9th Asian Games in 1982.
The previous consecutive champion was Japan. Since the first Asian Games in 1951, Japan had consecutively been the overall champion on eight occasions until 1978, but from 1982 to 2014, its position as the consecutive overall champion has been taken over by China that has won the Asian sporting event nine times in a row.
The 18th Asian Games this year will be hosted by Indonesia for the second time. Indonesia hosted the Asian sporting events for the first time in 1962, the fourth one after the Asian Games were first organized in New Delhi, India, in 1951. During the 4th Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia as the host, was the runner-up with  21 gold medals, 26 silver and 30 bronze medals, behind Japan who was the overall champion with 73 gold, 65 silver and 23 bronze medals.
The 18th Asian Games 2018, to be attended by 45 countries  featured 462 events of 40 sports, of which 32 are Olympic sports and eight are non-Olympic sports.
The Olympic sports are Aquatics, Athletics, Fencing, Weightlifting, Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Baseball/Softball, Cycling, Equestrian, Golf, Wrestling, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Canoeing and Kayaking, Sailing, Shooting, Modern Pentathlon, Archery, Sport climbing, Rowing, Rugby, Gymnastics, Skateboarding, Football, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Boxing, Triathlon, and Volleyball.
The non-Olympic sports are Bowling; Bridge; Cricket; Kabaddi; Martial Arts, such as Jujitsu, Kurash, Pencak Silat, Sambo, and Wushu; Mechanical Sports, such as Paragliding and Jet skiing; Squash; and Sepak Takraw.
Indonesia plans to broadcast live 38 out of the 40 sports to be competed at the event. "We will use a total of 427 high-definition cameras to broadcast all sports events live, except for bridge and squash," Director of Broadcast of the Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee INASGOC Linda Wahyudi stated last year.
INASGOC has signed a contract with Swiss International Games and Broadcast Services as a partner in broadcasting the Asian Games 2018 live.  A Japanese broadcasting company Dentsu will be the Asian Games 2018 broadcast rights holder, while the Emtek Group has the broadcast rights of the 2018 Asian Games for Indonesia.
INASGOC expects to spend up to Rp800 billion to broadcast live the 38 sports events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies and targets 20 countries to broadcast live for three weeks.
According to INASGOC Chairman Erick Thohir, six Asian countries have already acquired the broadcasting rights: Qatar, China, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and India.
