RI AIMS TO BOOST FOREIGN BUYERS' ATTENDANCE AT TRADE EXPO

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Oct 9 (Antara) - Indonesia is eager to attract at least 10,000 foreign buyers and conclude at least US$2 billion in trade transactions during the Trade Expo Indonesia 2013 (TEI), which will be held in Jakarta from October 16 to 20.
"We have registered more than seven thousand foreign buyers. The expo will begin on October 16, which will still give us time to try and boost the number of buyers to between 9,000 and 10,000," Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan stated last week.
Indonesia has also been stepping up the trade expo's promotions abroad to attract more buyers and achieve its targeted trade transactions.
One such effort to promote the Indonesia Trade Expo 2013 was launched last week by the Indonesian Consulate Office in Tawau, Malaysia.
The Indonesian consulate office in Tawau had invited some 50 Malaysian businessmen from Tawau for a TEI 2013 luncheon, Muhammad Soleh, Indonesia's Consul in Tawau revealed.
He added that the luncheon was organized to provide information about Indonesia's plan to host the 28th TEI in October 2013. Soleh further pointed out that the get-together was organized by the Indonesian consulate in Tawau, with the aim of enrolling some of the luncheon's participants for attending TEI 2013 and trying to exceed the enrolments beyond 17, which was the attendance last year.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Ambassador to Morocco Tosari Widjaja has also invited the country's businessmen to the five-day expo to help them assess Indonesia's quality products that are marketed in Morocco or re-exported to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and America.
Twelve Moroccan businessmen will attend the TEI, the Indonesian embassy in Morocco pointed out.
Tanti Widyastuti, the embassy's minister counselor told the Antara correspondent in London recently that the businessmen's plan of attending the expo was confirmed during a business gathering held at the embassy recently.
According  to Widyastuti, the Indonesian ambassador had highlighted Indonesia's success as one of the world's 16 largest economies and a member of the Group of Twenty (G-20) industrialized and emerging market economies.
"Ambassador Tosari Widjaja has invited the Moroccan businessmen to attend the Trade Expo Indonesia in Jakarta," she added.
She also pointed out that the 2012 TEI had brought together 2,000 exhibitors and attracted 5,000 businessmen from 90 countries, with more than US$1 billion worth of transactions having being struck at the event.
Widyastuti noted that the business gathering was also intended to encourage Moroccan businessmen to become buyers at the TEI.
Till now, about 7,000 buyers have confirmed participation in the TEI, Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan revealed.
A total of 2,000 domestic companies have also confirmed their participation and will display their products during the exposition. As of now, a total of 7,112 foreign buyers from 92 countries have been registered.
"We are optimistic that the Indonesian Trade Expo 2013 will help realize trade transactions of up to US$2 billion. We have not set a big transaction target because we are aiming for winning more long-term contracts instead," Wirjawan said.
The Trade Minister explained that the registered international buyers had expressed an interest in value-added finished goods, such as textiles and textile products, furniture, processed food and beverages, as well as paper and rubber products.
"This marks a shift from exporting (raw) commodities to exporting value-added goods. We hope this will increase the value of Indonesian non-oil exports," he said.
The TEI, which will be themed 'Remarkable Indonesia' will also showcase the diversity of high quality and value added Indonesian products, which are ready for export.
"Entering its 28th year, Trade Expo Indonesia is set to turn better than ever this year. TEI's theme this year is 'Remarkable Indonesia'; it was chosen to illustrate the diversity of Indonesian products that add value, are of a high quality and are ready to be exported," Wirjawan had stated at a press conference earlier this month.
This year's expo will also feature the TEI Export Development Pavilion, which will exhibit various products, such as strategic industrial products (aircraft, ships, defense equipment, radar telecommunications); biotechnology, downstream agricultural products, plantation and mining; automotive products; creative products and information technology; skilled labor services (nurses, operators); professional and consulting services; and products created by small and medium enterprises.
The Chief Executive of TEI 28, Gusmardi Bustami added that this year's expo will also offer several skilled labor production services that meet international standards.
"The competitiveness of Indonesia's production services is quite high, given that many Indonesian workers have highly valued skill sets that are priced competitively," he explained.
The production services that will be showcased at the exhibition include skilled labor services, mining services, and banking and insurance services.
In addition to the expo, the Ministry of Trade, in cooperation with other ministries, such as the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), will host several events, such as the Trade and Investment Forum, one-on-one business meetings, business clinics and company visits.
The TEI 2013 committee is also organizing a series of exhibitions, including the Jakarta Fashion Week 2014, which will be held from Oct. 17 to 25, preceded by the Buyers Room activities on Oct. 17 to 19 at Senayan City, Jakarta, the Yogyakarta Trade Expo 2013 from Oct. 18 to 22 in Yogyakarta and the Bali World Seafood Show to be held on Oct. 22 and 23 at the Bali International Convention Centre in Nusa Dua Bali.
Gusmardi also pointed out that the peripheral activities were no less important than the expo itself. "Through these activities, Indonesian businessmen can learn the conditions conducive for targeting export markets, examining the opportunities and challenges of entering a particular market, meeting directly with potential trading partners and enjoying many other benefits," he added.
TEI has attracted qualified buyers from around the globe to participate in the expo. But its role is not isolated from that played by the Indonesian Representative Office abroad, including the Commercial Attaché and Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC), which has marketed the event to overseas buyers through various road shows and promotions. ***3***
