JOKOWI, MUHAIMIN PAIRING FAVORED BY MUSLIM VOTERS

By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, July 6 (Antara) - Many predict incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) will be reelected for a second term in 2019, despite the fact that he has not decided who his running mate will be.
Major political parties, including the Golkar Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB), which have formed a coalition to support Jokowi's bid for reelection, have expressed hope that their respective general chairmen will be chosen as the President's running mate.
The Golkar Party has encouraged President Jokowi and Golkar General Chairman Airlangga Hartarto (AH) to pair up for the 2019 presidential election.
"Jokowi-AH is an ideal pair that is mutually complementary," Golkar's Chairman for East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Melki Laka Lena, said in a press statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
The NTT chapter of Golkar wholeheartedly supports the proposal to select Jokowi and AH as the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2019 presidential race, Lena said.
"This is the official stance of the Golkar NTT," Lena revealed. "Golkar NTT declared its support for the Jokowi-AH pairing on Wednesday."
The same hope is also expressed by PKB, which is confident that President Jokowi will get reelected in 2019 as plenty of progress has been made under his administration, particularly in the field of infrastructure.

"Pak (Mr.) Jokowi has succeeded in bringing Indonesia to an advanced stage, especially in terms of infrastructure development, which has always been one of the obstacles in the path of improving the national economy," PKB Deputy Secretary General Fathan Subhi said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Subhi said he feels very confident that people will again pin their hopes on Jokowi to ensure a better future for Indonesia.
"This is the result of discussions at the meeting with Golkar Chairman Pak Airlangga and friends, and we have agreed to follow-up more seriously in the coming weeks the issue of Pak Jokowi's running mate from PKB," Subhi said. "We will encourage the JOIN pairing."
JOIN stands for Jokowi-Cak Imin. Cak Imin is Muhaimin Iskandar, the general chairman of the PKB. According to Subhi, PKB and Golkar will discuss more seriously the strategy and steps of PKB to ensure Jokowi wins the presidential election.

"We are intensively discussing, and that includes asking for input from PKB Muslim clerics and cadres in the region, to ensure Pak Jokowi wins a second term," he said.
According to a survey conducted by the Research Development and Conflict Management Center (Puspek) of the Politics and Social Science Faculty of Surabaya's Airlangga University (Unair), the JOIN ticket is the most favored by Muslim voters.
PKB is considered the political party of the country's largest Muslim organization, Nadlatul Ulama (NU).
Subhi said he is convinced that Jokowi will be elected for a second term, as he has succeeded not only in the development of infrastructure but also in improving national economic growth. Based on the Ministry of Finance's accountability report, the management of the national economy throughout 2017 was positive, with economic growth at 5.07 percent.
"Our economic growth is at five percent and the government has also managed to control inflation," he said. "Based on data from Bank Indonesia, inflation stood at 3.12 percent in June 2018."
According a statement released by Puspek in Jakarta on Tuesday, a survey involving three presidential tickets showed Jokowi-Cak Imin in the lead with 41 percent of respondents saying they would vote for the duo, while the pairings of Prabowo-Zulkifli Hasan and Gatot-Anies secured 26.3 percent and 6.4 percent of votes, respectively.

Prabowo Subianto is the leader of the opposition party Gerindra, while Zulkfli Hasan is the general chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
Gatot Nurmantiyo is the former Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) commander and Anies Baswedan is the current governor of Jakarta.
If only two presidential and vice presidential pairs were to run in the 2019 elections, Jokowi-Cak Imin would secure 42 percent of the votes, while Prabowo-Anies would be seven percent behind them with 35.7 percent.
Jokowi's reelection chances would increase to 47.1 percent if he were to pair again with Jusuf Kalla, the current vice president.
According to the survey, 47.9 percent of Muslim voters favored Jokowi, while 30.1 percent preferred Prabowo.
"Support for Jokowi comes mainly from villages, the people of Java Island, and women, while support for Prabowo comes primarily from urban areas, people outside of Java Island, and men," Puspek Director Novri Susan revealed. "Jokowi and Prabowo both have solid support.***2***
