RI TO SHARE EXPERIENCE IN FIGHTING TERRORISM

By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, July 28 (Antara) - Terrorism and radicalism are increasingly considered to be posing threats to the world peace and security, forcing many nations to join forces in the fight against them.
The current security crisis in Marawi City of the Philippines showcases how radicalism has threatened security in Southeast Asia. It has driven Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to enhance cooperation to address it. Hence, the problem will also be discussed in the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which will be held from August 4 to 8.
Indonesia, which is known to be relatively successful in fighting terrorism, will share its experience in the ARF. This weekend, it will, therefore, host the conference of Sub Regional Meeting on Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Cross Border Terrorism (SRM FTF-CBT) in Manado, North Sulawesi.
Strategies and concepts on the effective fight against terrorism and radicalism will be formulated during the Manado conference, the results of which will be taken to the ARF.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto stated that Indonesia is recognized as a country which could take effective steps in the fight against terrorism.

Indonesia is appreciated because in fighting terrorism, it takes not only hard approaches but also soft approaches.
"In the upstream area, we fight terrorism with a soft approach operations, guidance, and deradicalization program," Wiranto, who is visiting Manado, North Sulawesi, to attend the SRM FTF-CBT conference, stated.
Six countries are gathering in Manado, the capital of Indonesian province of North Sulawesi, on Saturday, to discuss terrorism. "Tomorrow, (July 29) six countries, namely New Zealand, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, will discuss terrorism in Manado,"  Wiranto noted.
He stated that coordination meetings have been held in advance for the preparation for the Sub-Regional Meeting on Foreign Terrorist Fighter and Cross Border Terrorism. Indonesia will act as the host for the meeting that will discuss terrorism in Southeast Asia.
The focus will be put on how to study the anatomy, condition, and situation in South Philippines and how to overcome it together. All Southeast Asian countries agreed that they would not want to have their territories used by the ISIS as its new base.
Indonesia will hold a bilateral meeting with three countries ahead of the conference of Sub Regional Meeting on Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Cross Border Terrorism.
"Indonesia will hold a bilateral meeting with the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand," Wiranto said, adding that terror acts are currently taking place in Marawi City, South Philippines.
These meetings are to be held to jointly fight terrorist acts. "After all, New Zealand has a very strong determination to join the fight against terrorism," he added. In essence, six countries are now ready for the meeting on Saturday (July 29).

The Sub Regional Meeting on Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Cross Border Terrorism are to be attended by delegations from countries in the Sulu waters, namely New Zealand, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, as the host of the meeting.
Indonesia is hosting the conference on the fight against terrorism in the Southeast Asian region in Manado, North Sulawesi Province. It will produce a joint statement and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation to ensure stability and security in the region. The result of the meeting will be taken to ARF in Manila.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi will deliver the result of the SRM FTF-CBT
to the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting during the ARF. She will convey the message that terrorism is a common security threat to the Southeast Asian region.

The current security crisis in Marawi City of the Philippines has driven Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to have agreed to enhance cooperation to effectively address the threat of terrorism and extremism last month.
"We will emphasize the real threat of terrorism to the ASEAN countries. It is no longer in sight but it has infiltrated the Southeast Asian region," Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday (July 28).
Therefore, Wiranto hoped that the Manado meeting on foreign terrorist fighters would be able to formulate steps to be taken to the ASEAN regional forum in Manila next week.
"This conference is expected to produce something which is worth fighting terrorism in Southeast Asia, notably in Marawi, South Philippines," Wiranto explained in Manado.
He said that the six participating countries will discuss joint efforts to fight the activities of the ISIS in Southern Philippines and the Sulu Waters.
"We will discuss whether we fight through the cyber world or with a greater flexibility move in a joint patrol program," Wiranto noted, adding whether there will be exchange of experience and information, or even training, on how to handle terrorists.
"We will also discuss whether we are going to cut their logistics lanes. All this will be discussed tomorrow," he remarked. ***2***(A014/INE/B003)EDITED BY INE
