LEBARAN TRAVELERS URGED TO RETURN BEFORE JUNE 30

by Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, June 27 (Antara) - Homecoming Eid al-Fitr, or Lebaran travelers, who have celebrated the post-fasting festivities in their hometowns across the country, are expected to return before Friday, June 30, as trucks will begin plying from that day.
Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi urged travelers to return to Jakarta, or their places, before or on June 29, or three days after the Eid D-Day (H+3) since on June 30, or (H+4), the restriction on the movement of trucks transporting goods or logistics will be lifted.
"The peak of the reverse flow of travelers is predicted to extend across days. The favorite day is on Saturday, (July 1), and Sunday, (July 2), but I urge that they should go back to Jakarta before or on June 29 (Thursday), as on June 30, trucks will start operating again," the Ministry of Transportation quoted the minister as saying on its website http://www.dephub.go.id, on Monday.
The Ministry of Transportation had earlier forecast that the number of travelers during the Lebaran season this year would reach 19 million, or up 5.5 percent, from 18 million visitors in 2016.

The minister noted that the highest growth will be observed in air transportation.
"The total number of travelers is expected to reach 19 million, of which 5.4 million will travel using modes of air transportation, or an increase by nine percent. The growth in the number of passengers using sea and land transportation is relatively stable, while travelers using means of private transportation are estimated to increase by 10 percent," the minister pointed out.
"We have stopped or restricted certain trucks from operating within eight days (during the Lebaran festivities), so it is not possible for us to extend the restriction period on the movement of trucks. Hence, if there is no more activities in hometowns, do go back to Jakarta before June 30," the transportation minister stated on Monday (June 26).
The Minister of Transportation has forecast that the peak of reverse flow of travelers will be spread across days starting from June 28, or (H+2), to Sunday, or (H+6).
"It could be on Friday or Saturday. I think it should be spread between Wednesday and Sunday. Hence, assuming that there are 100 thousand travelers in one day, the carrying capacity of the road is not enough. However, if we divide it into five days, then 20 thousand per day is better. Some days can be used for vacation in Jakarta," the minister remarked.
"Emergency roads will be used during the reverse flow of travelers. Now, they are still used for travelers who are going to Central Java. Later, when the reverse flow starts on H+3 or H+4, they will be used only for vehicles headed to Jakarta," Minister Sumadi remarked.
Speaking in connection with the congestion that occurred on the Cikarang Main Toll on Sunday, the transportation minister said that there were additional contraflow lanes to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
"There is an increase in the flow of traffic after the holiday. We guess that it was a long holiday, from Friday last week to Friday this week, after which the Lebaran travelers will still have a week off. They did not go home on H-3 until H-1, but on the day of Eid. Today, the flow of traffic has started to improve because we will impose the contraflow system. This means that the road to Cipali from Jakarta will have contraflow lanes. It is expected to handle the flow of traffic from Jakarta to Cikarut and Cipali," he noted.
Furthermore, the transportation minister will conduct an evaluation on the estimated Lebaran transportation flow on H+4. The number of homecoming and reverse flow travelers to Jakarta is expected to remain the same.
"We have to conduct a thorough evaluation. I think that on H+3 or H+4, we will witness a reverse flow of travelers. Hence, the homecoming flow will get over today and tomorrow (H+1 and H+2). However, on H+4, the number of homecoming and reverse flow travelers will already be the same. We will make an estimate along with the police and the Ministry of Public Works on what kind of mechanism will be put in place and which lanes will be maintained," Sumadi stated.
In the meantime, the reverse flow of travelers from Sumatra to Java has begun on Tuesday.
State-owned waterway transportation service PT ASDP Indonesia for the Bakauheni Ferry Port in the eastern tip of Sumatra has ferried 44,479 returning travelers to Merak Ferry Port in the western tip of Java since Monday morning until Tuesday morning.
Some 114 trips were made by 30 ships to ferry the travelers. Some 8,854 vehicles, including motorcycles or two-wheelers, were transported from Sumatra's Bakauheni port to Merak harbor of Java.
The reverse flow of travelers from Sumatra to Java through the port of Bakauheni in Lampung is expected to peak on Saturday, or five days after the Lebaran D-Day. However, the flow of vehicles is not forecast to be as high as that at Merak Port.
The number of Lebaran travelers crossing Sunda Strait from Java to Sumatra for the Lebaran festivities during H-10 until the H-1 period was recorded at 807,114, while the number of vehicles reached 168,845.
During the same period, from H-10 to H-1, the number of travelers ferried from Bakauheni port to Merak port stood at 371,286 passengers and vehicles, at 67,287. Some 36 ferries were operated to serve travelers during the 2017 Lebaran holidays, up from 29 ships operated during the Eid al-Fitr last year.
However, based on ASDP's data at the Merak port, the number of passengers ferried to Sumatra during the period between H-10 and H-1 stood at 943,371, or up 12 percent, from 839,573 passengers recorded during 2016.***1*** (A014/INE) EDITED BY INE
