JAKARTA GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION ENDS PEACEFULLY

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, April 19 (Antara) - The second round of Jakarta gubernatorial election ran smoothly and peacefully on Wednesday with Anies Bawedan-Sandiaga Uno pair winning the runoff based on quick counts.
According to the results of the quick counts of a number of pollsters, Baswedan won the election against incumbent Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok who paired up with Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat.
"We have just received reports that 90 percent of the votes have been counted, and based on the quick count results, Jakarta will have a new governor and a new deputy governor," Prabowo Subianto, the general chairman of Gerindra, stated at his residence. Gerindra is the political party which nominated Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno in the Jakarta regional head election.
Based on the quick count conducted by Indobarometer, Baswedan won 58.50 percent of the votes against Ahok who grabbed 41.50 percent; Charta Politika gave Baswedan a victory of 57.87 percent against Ahok with 42.13 percent; and Voxpul Center quick count revealed the victory of Baswedan by winning 59.40 percent of the votes against Ahok who won 40.60 percent.
"On Dec 23, 2016, we started in this place, and today we are here again. I congratulate Baswedan and Uno. This is the victory of all Indonesian people, the victory of democracy. It is inseparable from the support of national figures," Prabowo noted, congratulating Baswedan-Uno for the success.

He made the statement at his residence in the presence of a number of national figures, including Parindo Party Chairman Hary Tanoesoedibjo, Amien Rais (former chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly or MPR), businessman Aburizal Bakrie, and musician Ahmad Dhani.
Although Baswedan has won the runoff election based on quick counts, the official election results will be issued by the Jakarta General Election Commission (KPU). The results of quick counts on elections by several survey institutions can be used as a reference only, as it is not a final result.
"The quick counts and surveys are valid, measured, and accountable activities. The public can use the results only as a reference," the KPU Chairman Arief Budinman stated following the disclosure of the results of quick counts by pollsters.
Budinman noted that through the surveys, the public can gain quick information of all the activities of the regional head elections. However, he reaffirmed that the results of the quick counts and surveys do not constitute a final and official result. "It should be understood that the final results will be announced by the Jakarta KPU," he added.
In the meantime, Ahok pledged to finish all pending jobs and hoped that Baswedan will continue his programs.
"We hope the programs could be finished fast to reduce the burden of Pak Anies and Pak Sandi, and a lot of projects could be dedicated," he remarked.
He added that he would finish the jobs fast to help reduce the burden of Anies and Sandi.
"I have spoken to Hidayat, stating that we still have six months left before the inauguration (of the new governor). Therefore, we will work fast and well," he stated at a press conference.
He noted that he would finish the remaining tasks and jobs, but expressed hope that Baswedan and Uno will continue with the remaining tasks.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla appreciated the election, which ran smoothly and peacefully. "I am happy because it went on smoothly and securely. Many had thought that it would be marked by rioting. I appreciate everyone who were involved in implementing the elections peacefully. There were no incidents reported at the polling stations," Kalla remarked.
National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian and Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General M. Iriawan observed the election runoff at several polling stations, including those in South and Central Jakarta.
According to Karnavian, the security conditions during the election were guaranteed and under control. "The security situation until 1 pm local time was guaranteed. No significant incidents happened. I think all Jakarta residents should maintain this conducive condition until the end of the ballot counting," Karnavian hoped.
A total of 64,523 joint police, military, and other security personnel were mobilized to maintain security during the Jakarta second round of gubernatorial election.
The Jakarta Regional Elections Commission organized the second round of the Jakarta regional head election for two pairs of Jakarta governor candidates, namely the Ahok-Hidayat and the Baswedan-Uno pairs.
The runoff was held after no candidate pair managed to gain a majority in the first round of the Jakarta regional head election held on Feb 15, which was contested by three candidate pairs.
The three candidate pairs who took part in the election were Agus Harimurti-Sylviana Murni, Ahok-Hidayat, and Baswedan-Uno.
In the first round of the election, Harimurti, who is the son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, received the least number of votes.
The Ahok-Baswedan pair contested in the runoff election to decide the winner of the Jakarta gubernatorial election for the next five-year period from 2017 to 2022.
A total of 7.2 million eligible voters in Jakarta cast their votes in the Jakarta runoff election on Wednesday. ***2***(A014/INE/B003)EDITED BY INE
