'SILARIANG' MOVIE REFLECTS BUGINESE ELOPEMENT VALUES

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, March 23 (Antara) - Young lovers must fight tooth and nail and remove all kinds of barriers  if they want to maintain their love and pass the aisle into wedlock.
But what happens if the parents of the two lovers do not agree with their relations? Most commonly in South Sulawesi in the past, the young couples resorted to what is called 'Silariang', a term which in Buginese or Makassarese means elopement.
In South Sulawesi, Silariang is a big shame that tarnishes the dignity or the self-esteem of parents, particularly the parents of the girl. It often ends up in bloodshed, an occasion which based on tradition in the past, is commonly acceptable to the Buginese people in South Sulawesi.
Perhaps this value is being reflected in the 'Silaring Movie' that the film is relatively successful in netting moviegoers.
The Silariang Film --starring Jeyhan Kler as Ali, Dinda Surbakti as Cia, Nurfadillah Naifa as Ati, Ikram Noer as Rio and Husen as Mamak Ramlah--  proved its success to attract film-goers although it is only played at limited movie theaters and is starred by local film artists.

s
Based on data released by Filmindonesia.or.id, up to Monday (March 20), the Silariang Film has been watched by 163,065 moviegoers.
"The success of Silariang Film in attracting hundreds of thousands of cinema-goers is thanks to the strong plot of the local values the film is depicting to emotionally related spectators," noted Nurfadillah Naifa, who played the character Ati in the film, in a press release made available to Antara on Wednesday (March 22).
She expressed hope that the success of Silaring Film will serve as a catalyst to local films so that they could be promoted further and find their slots in various movie theaters.
"The number of spectators watching the Silariang Film has met my expectation I expressed when it was officially released. After all, local films have begun to emerge. The closeness of the story to the day-to-day life of the Buginese people that we depict through Silariang Film is one of the main factor in attracting moviegoers. I hope that the 'Uang Panai Film' and the 'Silariang Movie' which I star both could serve as a starting point for  local films to gain more attention of the people," she said.
The 'Uang Panai Film' is another local film which also tells a story on engagement from South Sulawesi. She hoped that local films would not only win increasing numbers of spectators but also continue to improve their qualities.
Increase in the number of spectators should be a motivator for cineastes to produce more qualitative films. "We as part of the film industry in Makassar must learn how to produce quality works so that our moviegoers would not be disappointed. I personally will continue to learn how to have good action," Nurfadillah Naifa said.
The Silariang Movie tells a story about Cia (Dinda Surbakti) and Ali (Jeyhand Kler), a young couple who face a steep road in fostering their love. Cia and Ali share the same university as students.  Their relation became more and more complicated as their parents do not condone it.
Luckily, Cia and Ali have loyal friends. They have Ati (Nurfadillah Naifa), Rio (Ikram Noer) and Mamak Ramlah (Husen) who always provide them with advices and support.
However, as they saw that their parents had been in hostile since youth, Cia and Ali decided to elope with each other.
In the past, their fathers were brave young men who each had a grudge between them. The father of Cia who has blue blood rejected their relations and banned Ali from loving his daughter because of his blue blood and past hostility with Ali's father.
Efforts made by Ali to continue their relations with Cia continue to face a stumbling block and never get consent from Cia's father. Because they have true love, the two lovers finally decided to run away.
Cia escaped her house through a window where Ali had been there to pick her up. They runaway crossing plots of rice fields. Cia happened to be very tired and collapsed in a rice field. Later, they hid in the home of the Rio - Ati (Ikram Noer - Nurfadillah Naifa) couple.
The elopement of Ali-Cia triggered a severe conflict among their parents, particularly between their fathers.  The conflict almost cause bloodshed. The conflict become sharper and sharper when they were in search of the two young lovers.

Silariang sometimes becomes the last option for two lovers who are in love but  they do not obtain the blessing of the parents.
For Buginese-Makassarese people, a daughter who obtains no blessing and involves in elopement is a great shame, which tarnishes the dignity of the family, particularly the dignity of the girl's family.
The girl and her partner are no longer considered as members of the families. They are even considered as dead couple. The family of the girl, notably the father, has the obligation to improve the tarnished image, so that when he finds the girl's partner, he has the obligation to stab him with a dagger. This is a must, as long as the couple has not yet corrected their mistake.
However, if the couple hides at the Imam or community leader's home, they cannot be attacked and the imam has the obligation to mediate the problem.
Once they reached agreement, the Imam takes the couple to the girl's father's house to pay a fine and dowry money, thus the tarnished dignity is improved and the mistake is corrected.
Thus, the release of the 'Silariang Movie' which reflects one of the traditional values of the Buginese and Makassarese people in South Sulawesi, is good to watch and to promote local values and wisdom.***4***(A014/H-YH)(T.A014/A/BESSR/A/Yosep) 23-03-2017 23:58:3
