INDONESIA WILL SHINE AT U.S. COFFEE EXPO

By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, March 26 (Antara) - Indonesia is known as a country that exports the best quality coffee, such as Robusta and Arabica coffee, but production at home last year remained slightly stagnant.
Its coffee products remain so popular in the global market that the Specialty Coffee Association America (SCAA) has named Indonesia as its official Portrait Country for its SCAA Expo 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia, the United States.
Indonesia's 3,200-mile archipelago with more than 13,000 islands, 120 active volcanoes, ample rainfall, fertile soil and ideal temperatures is home to a variety of coffees.
It is no surprise that Indonesia was named the third largest producer of coffee in the world in 2014, according to the International Coffee Organization.
Annually, Indonesia is estimated to produce 750 thousand metric tons of coffee. Of this, an estimated 154 thousand metric tons is required for domestic consumption. Of the exports, 25 percent are  Arabica beans, and the rest comprise Robusta.

The SCAA website, www.scaaevent.org, said Specialty Arabica Coffee is undoubtedly Indonesia's most famous gift to the world that has received worldwide acknowledgment, establishing Indonesia's position as the second largest specialty Arabica exporter in the world with 150,000 tons of annual export.
The SCDAA Expo 2016 which will be held next month (April 14-17, 2016) is expected to help promote the country's coffee produce and help boost production at home.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia's coffee production only rose by one percent to 500 thousand tons last year.
"Our coffee production has been stagnant. It only reached 500 thousand tons last year, reflecting just one percent increase," he told a meeting convened to develop national coffee in Lampung Province on Feb. 12.
Indonesia produces an average of 600 thousand to 700 thousand tons of coffee per year. In comparison, Vietnam's coffee output reaches more than 2 million tons, he said.
As a matter of fact, Vietnam once learned coffee farming from Indonesia, he said.
He said Lampung province is the country's largest Robusta coffee producer with an annual production of 100 thousand tons per year.
Thanks to the popularity of its coffee, however, Indonesia as one of the world's largest coffee producers, will become the focus of attention of the world's coffee lovers during the event in the United States next month.
According to the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston, Indonesia will appear as the official portrait country of the Coffee Association America (SCAA) Expo 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia, the United States.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry said on its website on Saturday the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston has notified that at the expo event, Indonesia will become the focus of attention of all participants and coffee lovers across the world.
As a portrait country of the SCAA Expo 2017, Indonesia will become the main focus of more than 12 thousand visitors and the business sector, importers, and coffee retailers, in addition to distributors, farmers, traders and culinary practitioners.
Such a rare opportunity should be used to generate a good momentum to promote Indonesia as a world class coffee paradise.
The coffee consumption trend in the United States continues to increase, according to the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston. As one of the world's largest coffee producers, Indonesia should be able to play a key role in the United States market.
Since 1699, nearly 100 genetic varieties of Arabica Coffee have been identified in Indonesia which include Sumatera Lintong, Sumatera Koerinci, Sumatera Solok Minang, Java Preanger, Java Ijen Raung, Java Estate, Sulawesi Toraja, Papua Wamena and many more small holder coffees produced in six coffee islands.
Currently, Indonesia practices sustainable development when it comes to Arabica Coffee cultivation and will showcase its finest coffees at the 2016 SCAA Expo in Atlanta.
Indonesia was the world's third largest coffee producer in 2014, according to the International Coffee Organization (ICO).
The most popular coffee export product of Indonesia that has gained recognition across the world is the Arabica coffee.
This fact has made Indonesia the world's second largest Arabica coffee exporter with annual exports of 150 thousand tons.
Thanks to an increase in modern post-harvest facilities and improved yield techniques, Indonesian growers have mastered the production of a wide range of cupping profiles, such as Giling Basah or Wet Hulled, each measured and graded to meet SCAA specialty standards and protocols.

As coffee aficionados continue to seek innovation, sustainability and transparency, many farmers' cooperatives and exporters of Indonesia have obtained certification and become more sophisticated to satisfy the demands of discerning buyers all over the world.
A specialty coffee adventure full of rich history and flavor awaits buyers and visitors wishing to engage with Indonesian specialty coffee growers and exporters. Come join us at the 28th Annual SCAA Expo to experience the finest coffee profiles of Indonesia.
One of the Indonesia's coffee producer provinces is Lampung. Lampung recorded an increase in its exports of Robusta coffee beans to 9,896 tons, valued at US$16.25 million, in February 2016, up from 8,418 tons worth US$14 million in January.
Exports rose as farmers and traders held large stock of beans, head of the provincial trade office, Ferynia, said  on March 1.  Also, exporters have more orders to meet under contract, Ferynia said.
He said farmers and exporters hold substantial stocks although it was not yet time for grand harvest.
Grand harvest is expected to begin around July and last till September, he said.
The farmers' sale price in Lampung at present is still less than Rp19,000 per kilogram. One US dollar is more or less equal to Rp13,200.

Farmers hope the price will rise to at least Rp20,000 per kg, a farmer, Suudi, in the village of Way Harong, regency of Tanggamus, said. "The price of Rp20,000 per kilogram is considered reasonable to encourage the farmers," Suudi said.
Indonesia is the fourth largest producer of coffee beans  in the world after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia and the world's second largest producer of Robusta coffee after Vietnam. ***3***
