RI TIGHTENS SECURITHY FOR X'MAS, NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Dec 24 (Antara) - The Indonesian authorities have stepped up security measures in an effort to provide peaceful and quiet conditions for the people celebrating the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, Christmas and the New Year 2016.
The Indonesian National Police will field at least 80 thousand personnel across the country to maintain security, particularly on Christmas Eve and will guard churches and church goers throughout the country.
"We have to guard each other because security should be maintained not by the police only, but also by people and societal organizations," Vice President Jusuf Kalla said on the sidelines of a celebration held to observe the birth of the Prophet Muhammad at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on Thursday.
According to National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, the National Police will deploy 80,197 police personnel across the country to maintain security in the run-up to the advent of New Year 2016.
He said the police personnel will be deployed under a security operation code-named "Operasi Lilin 2015" (Operation Candle 2015). The operation will be carried out from December 25 to January 2.

During this operation, the National Police will be assisted by 20,681 military officers and 49,670 personnel from other agencies, such as Public Order Security Forces (Satpol PP), the transportation services and fire brigade, the police chief said during a roll call on the pacification of Christmas and New Year 2019 on Wednesday.
"The personnel will be stationed at 1,557 security posts and 638 service posts throughout Indonesia," said Badrodin.
Vice President Kalla said threats existed the world over, and not only in Indonesia. Therefore, all countries needed to be on guard against any security threats.
Gen. Badrodin urged people to remain alert to any potential of terror acts. Terror acts that take place abroad can spill over to Indonesia during the celebrations of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, Christmas and New Year 2016, he reiterated.
"The attacks on civilians in Paris, the suicide bombings in Bangkok, and the threat of ISIS have had an impact on the security conditions in the country," he said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The police official also expressed hope that the armed radical group's terror acts would not happen in Indonesia as it could destroy national stability.
Badrodin also mentioned a number of incidents in Indonesia in 2015, such as the explosive blast at the Alam Sutra Mall, Tangerang, Banten, the social conflict in Aceh and Papua and the electric train¿Metromini bus collision in Jakarta recently.
The police chief said that in order to provide security for the people, a total of 998 CCTV units had been installed to monitor security conditions in sensitive areas during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Badrodin made the statement during a roll call on Wednesday. The roll call was in keeping with the theme, "Through roll call for Operasi Lilin 2015, we increased the synergy between the Police and the relevant agencies in the Framework of Providing Security and Convenience during Christmas and New Year 2016."
The roll call was also aimed at checking preparations for the launch of the "Operasi Lilin 2015" security operation. "This roll call is being held to check preparations and readiness for personnel deployed in the field. I hope the pacification that is carried out as part of Operasi Lilin 2015 would provide the people with a sense of total security so that they can perform religious rituals in a peaceful fashion," the National Police chief said.

Badrodin called on his rank and file to accord priority to preventive measures, which will be supported by intelligence operations, early detection and firm and professional enforcement of the law.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs, Luhut Panjaitan stated on Monday that strategic locations will be monitored as part of the efforts to maintain security.
"We are conducting operations and monitoring strategic locations with the assistance of the police and military forces," he said.
He made the statement at a press conference after meeting Australia's Attorney General George Brandis to discuss the security situation ahead of the year end.
Luhut revealed that he had involved all community elements in the effort by urging them to report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.
In a first-such initiative, the Minister also discussed security issues with Australian Attorney General George Brandis during the year-end.
"We discussed issues, such as counter-terrorism, cyber security and intelligence cooperation," he said at a press conference following the meeting.
"This is the first-ever such meeting, and similar meetings will be held regularly. Next year, we will be invited to such a meeting in Australia," Luhut said.
Brandis said at the meeting that both sides had discussed security cooperation between Indonesia and Australia. "We are strengthening relations between the two nations to jointly fight terrorism, for instance, the attacks being made by the ISIS. We also discussed intelligence cooperation," Brandis said.
Gen. Badrodin said the police had recently arrested nine suspected terrorists in the five districts of Cilacap, Tasikmalaya, Sukoharjo, Mojokerto and Gresik. "Some of them are former members of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) and are linked to ISIS," he revealed. ***2***
