SAIL TOMINI TO BRING ECONOMIC BENEFITS TO SULAWESI PROVINCES

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Sept 7 (Antara) - The ongoing Sail Tomini, an international yacht rally and festival organized in Indonesia's largest bay of Tomini, will have a long-term economic impact that will attract investment and improve the welfare of the local people.
The international maritime event was launched by the Coordinating Minister for Culture and Human Resource Development, Puan Maharani, in May and will conclude in the Parigi Moutong District Central Sulewesi on September 19.
"I hope investors will see the potential of Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo and North Sulawesi¿s marine, human and natural resources. Indonesia has potential other than Bali, Yogyakarta and others," Minister Maharani had said after a ministerial coordination meeting held in Jakarta in June.
The Tomini Bay borders the three provinces of Sulawesi, namely Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo and North Sulawesi.
"Sail Tomini should not be reduced to a mere ceremony. We must ensure that this event can be beneficial for the improvement of public welfare and boost economic progress in the provinces and the nation in the long term," Maharani stated after launching the event.

The sailing event is also expected to attract investors for the development of infrastructure and public facilities, such as hotels and restaurants, in the Tomini Bay area.
According to Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola, Sail Tomini will have a significant impact on the development of Central Sulawesi and will help promote its tourism sector, boost industrialization and accelerate economic growth.
"I believe that after Sail Tomini 2015, maritime industrial investment in the Gulf of Tomini, particularly in the fisheries and tourism sectors will increase by at least two-fold," Governor Djanggola remarked recently.
He noted that the international maritime event of Sail Tomini will also help accelerate marine industrial development in the Tomini Gulf region, which comprises of 19 districts in the provinces of Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and North Sulawesi.
However, Djanggola acknowledged that development in the region was facing numerous challenges, such as the continued decline in fishery resources, limited qualified human resources, weak economic competitiveness, and the threat to environmental degradation, among others.
In light of this, the Central Sulawesi Governor has called on the central government to help provide qualified human resources with a strong commitment to developing the region.
Sail Tomini will also improve the disbursement of budget in various sectors, particularly in the field of infrastructure for the construction of roads, bridges, and public facilities that will ultimately improve people's welfare.
Tomini Bay is one of the largest bays in Indonesia and is rich in maritime natural resources.
The six million-hectare (ha) bay has a coral area measuring 1,031 ha and a mangrove forest covering an area of 785.10 ha. "No wonder Tomini Bay is being developed as the main maritime tourism destination and a national food barn," Minister Maharani said in a statement.
Sail Tomini, which is expected to be attended by 10 thousand guests, will include 24 events, such as the Boalemo Festival in Gorontalo province, a yacht rally, the Surya Baskara Jaya healthcare operation, a village development movement, national seminars, a diplomatic tour, a Tomini Bay research expedition, and visits by media publications.
Some 100 foreign yachters from various countries are expected to participate in Sail Tomini 2015. Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister, Susi Pudjiastuti, expressed the hope that the event will help promote tourism and investment in Central Sulawesi and Gorontalo.
This was echoed by Minister Maharani while launching Sail Tomini.
In the meantime, Haswan Yunas, Minister Maharani¿s deputy, had said earlier that scores of tourists were expected to flock to the event.
"At least 10,000 domestic and foreign visitors are expected to flock to the Parigi Moutong district during the Sail Tomini event," Yunas stated.
Overseeing the preparations for the Sail Tomini main event recently, Yunas said the Kayubura beach area was the largest to have been put into use, compared with the previous sailing events.
He reiterated that the site for the Sail Tomini main event was very attractive and included many facilities and adequate infrastructure, such as electricity, clean water, drainage, sanitation, telecommunications, and other support structures.
"The site for the Sail Tomini main event, which is being built at a cost of some Rp30 billion, is strategically located because it is at the heart of the Sulawesi island and intersects with the Trans-Sulawesi road, which connects with the rest of the provincial capital cities on the island," Yunas noted.
Yunas also expressed hope that after the Sail Tomini main event, the Parigi Moutong district government will further improve the facilities and infrastructure at the Kayubura beach and turn it into a national and international Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism site.
MICE is a type of tourism in which large groups, with the help of advance planning, are brought together for a particular purpose.
As part of the Sail Indonesia series, Sail Tomini is the seventh event after the Sail Bunaken held in North Sulawesi in 2009, Sail Banda in Maluku in 2010, Sail Wakatobi-Bitong in Southeast Sulawesi and Bangka-Belitung Islands in 2011, Sail Morotai in North Maluku in 2012, Sail Komodo in East Nusa Tenggara in 2013, Sail Raja Ampat in West Papua in 2014, and now Sail Tomini 2015 in Central Sulawesi. ***3***(T.A014/INE)EDITED BY INE
