Jakarta, June 25 (Antara) - Amid the spread of terror threats, a bang will scare people if it comes from a bomb blast. However, it will amaze them if it is used to enliven a festivity.
Thus, the bangs of firecrackers for instance, which decorate the sky with lively colors during a festivity such as during a New Year's Eve and others, will entertain residents. In local traditions, people use different means to produce bang sounds in enlivening a festivity. Bambo cannon, apart from firecrackers, is the most popular to mention one. It is used in different parts of the country, even in other countries such as in Malaysia and the Philippines.
In Pontianak, the provincial capital of West Kalimantan, people also use carbide cannon beside bamboo cannon. West Kalimantan Governor Cornelis said the carbide cannon game played along the Kapuas River during the night of Lebaran (on the Eve of Eid al-Fitr) is the cultural tradition of the Pontianak Malay community.
"Carbide cannon game tradition as a local culture has been decided by the Ministry of Education and Culture as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia in 2016. So, it can no longer be claimed by any party apart by the Pontianak Malay community," Governor Cornelis said on Saturday night (June 24).
Carbide cannon is a unique tradition of Pontianak. This is only happen in Indonesia especially in West Kalimantan and only one in the world. This tradition is held to celebrate the festivity in the end of Ramadan month especially before The Ied Fitri or The Takbiran Night. Carbide cannon sometimes played along of the Kapuas River.
Cannon game is a tradition of Pontianak with a means made from log wood. It is not made from iron. It uses carbide as ammunition then ignited by fire. Carbide cannon is very big. It has 5-8 meters in length with diameter 30-100 centimeters. That's making Carbide cannon different from other cannon, according to an article quoted by the http://himlakroppsgina.blogspot.co.id, online site.
Governor Cornelis explained that his side had fought for the recognition of the carbide cannon game. It has been declared as one of the Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage belonging to the Pontianak Malay people.
The cannon game in Pontianak is played like a war face to face between the groups in one side of the river and the other one on the opposite side. One group has 3 until 8 carbide cannons. It has more than ten groups that play it along the river.
Initially, the carbide cannon game came into being after it was used to shoot a ghost.
According to the history of Pontianak city, Sultan Sayyid Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadri as a founder of Pontianak city and the first Sultan of Pontianak Sultanate was building the Jami mosque and the Sultanate of Pontianak. But, when he built it, a Kuntilanak (the ghost who is roaming on land) was disturbing him. And then he shot the Kuntilanak with his cannon. The goal is to throw out the Kuntilanak from the land.
This is the reason why the people of Pontianak who live in the Kapuas River banks have the tradition to play the carbide cannon to produce bang sounds during the Takbiran Night or on the Eve of the Eid al-Fitr festivity.
In the meantime, Pontianak City Mayor Sutarmidji said his side had applied for a patent right for the carbide cannon game. The application was filed together with a request for patent right for Pontianak's Equatorial Monument.
However there was a minor mistake when the application was registered. The registration should be conducted by a legal-based body or institution such as the Regional Government of Pontianak. At that time, however, it was registered in the name of the Pontianak mayor. Hopefully, the requirements will be met later and the patent right would be obtained.
"Thanks God, this year the Carbide Cannon Festival is livelier than last year. The two banks of the river are decorated with different decorative lamps. The banging of the cannon made the festivity even livelier," Mayor Sutarmiji said.
He hoped that in the future the Kapuas River banks would become the icon of Pontianak City and the center of tourism of the city which is known as the Equatorial City.
Besides carbide cannons, there is also a Bamboo Cannon Festival, celebrated a week before the Eid al Fitr festival. The biggest bamboo cannon in Indonesia broke record of the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) in 2007 and again 2009.
The bamboo cannon is a traditional game played by children. It is very popular in 90s. Nowadays, it's still played by children in rural areas, where the material (bamboo) is widely available.
