Jakarta, March 6 (Antara) - The government still needs to further promote its electricity programs to realize its 35 thousand megawatt (MW) power development target.
So far, of the 35 thousand megawatt target, only some 31,171 MW have been covered in work contracts, either of state-owned electricity firm PLN or private companies. Of the 31,171-MW, some 1,362-MW had been operational, 17,116-MW are in the construction phase and 12,693-MW are still in the construction plan.
Thus, to meet the 35 thousand megawatts, the government still runs short of 3,829-MW, it still has to promote to the private sector.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has reported the progress of the government's 35-thousand megawatt electricity development it has done until February 2018.
Until February this year, based on data monitored by Antara in Jakarta on the official website of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, power plants under this program that have been operational have reached a capacity 1,362-MW while plants which are still in the construction phase have a total capacity of 17,116 MW.
"This increase cannot be separated from the contribution of state-owned electricity company PLN and Independent Power Producers (IPP)," said Head of Communication, Public Information and Cooperation Services of the Ministry of ESDM, Agung Pribadi.
So far, 896 MW of the total 1,362 MW were produced by Independent Power Producers (IPP), while 466 MW others were built by the State Electricity Company PLN. The plants spread in Sulawesi with a total of 538 MW, followed by Sumatra 455 MW, Maluku and Papua 135 MW, Kalimantan 126 MW, while the rest of 108 MW is spread in Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara areas .
Furthermore, Pribadi added that as many as 17,116 MW have entered the construction phase, of which around 5,657 MW are by PLN and 11,459 by private developers.
While the remaining 12,693 MW have been covered by contract agreements but they have not yet entered the construction phase. Of this capacity, some 3,564 MW is still in the procurement stage and 1,245 MW in the planning phase.
The 35 thousand MW program aims to meet the electricity needs of the people of Indonesia from Sabang in the westernmost province of Aceh to Merauke in the easternmost province of Papua province. This will certainly have a significant impact on economic growth especially outside Java, which previously lacked electricity supply.
The availability of adequate, equitable and affordable electricity is the focus of the government. To achieve this, the ESDM Ministry opens opportunities for investors to contribute to the 35,000 MW program.
In the meantime, the House of Representatives (DPR) hopes that the government should not merely rely on the development of electricity plants in meeting the need for electricity of the people across the country.
Deputy Chairman of Commission VII on energy and mineral resources affairs of DPR, Herman Khaeron, said on Friday last week (Feb 23) that the government should also pay attention to the distribution and transmission aspect of the power supplies.
He suggested that the government should take necessary steps in accelerating equitable distribution of electrification with the development of electricity transmission networks.
For that, the distribution of electrification is expected not only to rely on the construction of power plants, but also on balanced transmission and distribution. "Power plant development plan must be systematic and integrated among related sectors," said Khaeron who is a Democratic Party politician.
Meanwhile, another deputy chairman of Commission VII, Satya Widya Yudha, said that his side will continue to supervise the provision of electricity supplies to various areas that have become the responsibility of PLN and the government.
Yudho explained, the provision of electricity needs to the region will be very helpful to promote various industries and boost economic growth and create new jobs.
Yudha who is a politician of the Golkar Party also reminded the government that the need for electricity has become a daily necessity of the people because it is needed for the various aspects of the lives of citizens.
The Indonesian government is currently launching its electrification program called "Indonesia Terang" (Indonesia Bright), with a target to provide electricity for 10.3 thousand villages until 2019, or about 97.35 percent of the country's electrification ratio.
Besides that, the government, since the start of President Joko Widodo's administration in October 2014, has set a target to build power plants with a total capacity of 35 thousand megawatts (MW) by 2019.
With the current national power capacity of 51 thousand MW, the implementation of the 35 thousand-MW project is expected to increase the national power capacity to 86 thousand MW.
However, the program's target seems unlikely to be achieved in 2019. Though the target is unlikely to be achieved in 2019, the government will continue to build power plants until the 35 thousand-MW target is achieved.***3*** (A014/H-YH)
