GOVERNMENT ACCELERATES ELECTRIFICATION PROGRAM IN N MALUKU

by Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Dec 27 (Antara) - The government, through state-owned power utility company PLN, is accelerating its electrification program in North Maluku, particularly in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai, in its efforts to provide equal power supplies to one of the eastern regions of Indonesia.
Until the end of this year, PLN has completed its electricity supply projects for 11 villages as a Christmas and New Year's gift for the residents of Hamahera and Morotai Islands.
Besides the six service units of the Sofifi Area, PLN area has upgraded its operations from 12 hours to 24 hours. This means that from next year on, PLN will operate and supply electricity for 24 hours in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai.
Besides supplying 11 villages with electricity by the end of this year, PLN will also accelerate its program to cover 48 other villages in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai next year.
"By the end of 2017, PLN has provided gifts for Halmahera and Morotai, with the supply of electricity for 11 villages," General Manager of PLN for Maluku and North Maluku, Djoko Dwijatno, noted in a press statement in Jakarta on Monday.

The 11 villages consist of six villages in East Halmahera District, namely Bebsili, Yawanli, Wayamli, Marasipno, Gaifoli, and Halitetor; and five villages in Morotai Island, namely Lou Madoro, Leo Leo, Saminyamau, Aruburung, and Posi-Posi.
"Thus, PLN is now officially supporting 1,894 new customers in Halmahera and Morotai," Dwijatno stated.
According to him, the system of electricity operation in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai, among others, uses the pattern of joint operation between the PLN and the local government.
The local government assistance involves the provision of generating plants, as a form of synergy of electricity services, for the communities in Halmahera and Morotai.
He remarked that in order to upgrade the Rao Island in Morotai Island District, North Maluku Province, PLN has provided three power plants, each with a capacity of 200 kWh, and has built a medium voltage network (JTM) along 24 kilometers, low voltage network (JTR) along 8.3 kilometers, and eight transformers. The local government of Pulau Morotai District is helping to provide land for the plant.
According to Dwijatno, the six Service Units of PLN for Sofifi Area have officially changed their operations to provide power supplies from 12 hours to 24 hours.
The six service units are the Ibu Service Unit, providing service for the subdistricts of Ibu, South Ibu, and Tabaru; the Kedi Service Unit, supplying electricity for the subdistrict of Loloda; the Buli Service Units, catering to the subdistricts of Maba and Central Mava; the Subaim Service Unit supplying electricity for the subdistricts of Wasile, East Wasile, and South Wasile; the Bere-Bere Service Unit, supplying electricity for the subdistrict of North Morotai and some villages in Morotai Jaya; and the Sopi Service Unit for some villages in Morotai Jaya.
The operations of electricity generators for villages in a number of subdistricts are expected to help generate the economic activities of villagers and local people.
PLN has also upgraded the status of Daruba Service Unit to a Rayon Unit, so that it could maximally provide services to the people in the Morotai Island and its surrounding areas.
"The change in the power supply from 12 hours to 24 hours is a Christmas gift from PLN. The government is now caring for isolated villagers like us in remote areas," Norce Tobelo, a resident of Kedi Village, Loloda Subdistrict, West Halmahera District, remarked.
According to Dwijatno, PLN has set a target to soon supply electricity, by the end of 2017, to six villages in Pulau Gebe Island, Central Halmahera, in North Maluku Province.
He noted that PLN has targeted to electrify 48 other villages in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai in 2018. Regarding the change in the hours of operation from 12 into 24 hours, PLN has set the target for the Patani Service Unit to operate at the end of December 2017 and the Lolobata Service Unit, Bicoli Service Unit, and Maffa Service Unit at the end of January 2018.
"This means that in future, the electricity systems in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai will all operate for 24 hours," he noted.
Dwijatno revealed that there were 71,576 consumers who used prepaid system or smart electricity in the islands of Halmahera and Morotai.
Thus, currently, about 67.05 percent of PLN customers in Halmahera and Morotai have used the prepaid electricity system. Hopefully, all customers in other regions in the two islands would soon use the prepaid system. ***3***(A014/INE)EDITED BY INE/B003
