MEAT PRICES JUMP UP ONE DAY BEFORE 'LEBARAN'

By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, July 27 (Antara) - Beef prices in different parts of the country drastically increased on Saturday, one day before Muslims celebrate the post-fasting Idul Fitri holidays on Monday and Tuesday.
The price increases varied from one regions to another, from about 10 percent in Jakarta for example to 55 percent in Sukabumi District, West Java.
The highest increase of beef price one day ahead of the Idul Fitri, or Lebaran day took place in a traditional market in Sukabumi, which rose by about 55 percent from that three days earlier.
"Today, the local beef  price in traditional market jumped up to Rp150 thousand per kg. However, mixed meat still could be bought at a price of Rp120 thousand per kg," beef trader coordinator at Cibadak traditional market, Suhendi told Antara on Sunday.
Suhendi explained that the rising beef price was caused by high consumers' demand in the face of the Idul Fitri festivity on Monday. The price of beef in Sukabumi two days earlier was still Rp90 thousand to Rp100 thousand per kg.
Despite rising prices, traders were overwhelmed to cater consumers' demand because stocks were running short on Sunday.

Price hikes also took place in Central Kalimantan, particularly in Sampit, capital town of  Kotawaringin Timur District, where meat in the local traditional markets also sky-rocketed to Rp140 thousand per kg.
"I am surprised to learn that the price has increased to Rp140 thousand per kg, though actually it has been increasing in the past several days to Rp130 thousand per kg," said Ica, a consumer at the Keramat traditional market on Sunday.
He said that over the past one year the price had risen to Rp130 thousand per kg. During the normal condition last year the price was only about Rp75 thousand per kg. But in the face of the Lebaran or one day ahead of the Idul Fitri, it jumped up to Rp140 thousand.
The same thing also happened in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. One day ahead of the Idul Fitri festivity on Sunday, beef price rose to Rp140 thousand per kg.
"Now beef is sold at Rp140 thousand per kg. Yesterday it was still cheaper," said Mat Nasir, beef trader in Jalan M Yamin, Pontianak, on Sunday. He said the price increased was boosted by increasing demand for the commodity.
At Flamboyan market  in North Pontianak, the price was still at Rp125 thousand on Saturday, however.
In Central Sulawesi provinc's city of Palu, the meat price increased by 25 percent ahead of the Lebaran day. At the Manonda Presidential Instruction Market,  the price of meat was sold at Rp100 thousand per kg.
Fahria, a meat trader at the Manonda market said the increase in the beef price had been taking place for three days as a result of  consumers' high demand. He said the price increase was logical as demand for the commodity  was also on the rice in the face of the Lebaran festivity.
The increase is about 25 percent from that on regular days, he added.
Contrast to the price in Sukabumi (West Java), the beef price in Bandung District of West Java was cheaper, namely only increasing by about 22 percent. While prices in Sukabumi increased to about 55 percent, the price of meat in Bandung only increased by about 23 percent.
One day ahead of the meat in the traditional market in Bandung District rose to Rp110 thousand per kg from Rp90 thousand.
Anwar, a trader at Cicalengka traditional market said on Sunday demand for meat one day ahead of the Lebaran day had driven up the price.
Virtually, in its efforts to provide adequate beef stocks, the government has prepared some 170 thousand heads of cattle, to meet the demand for meat during the fasting month of Ramadan and the post-fasting Idul Fitri or Lebaran festivities.
Besides, the government increased the beef reference price from the current Rp76,000 per kg to Rp85,000 per kg, in an effort to help cattle farmers obtain incentives, so that they can raise pedigree and feedlot cows.
In Jakarta the increase in beef prices were also relatively high in traditional markets.  "Currently the price is about Rp120 thousand per kg, or an increase of Rp10 thousand from Rp110 thousand previously. The normal price is actually Rp90 thousand per kg,"  Cecep, a beef trader at Pasar Senen market said.
Cecep said the meat price increased by about 35 percent to  40 percent. "Price increases are normal things in the face of Lebaran," he said.
Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo inaugurated the launch of a 'Beef Market Operation' on Thursday (July 24) last week to meet the increased demand for meat during the Idul Fitri celebrations.
"I herewith declare the launch of the Beef Market Operation," said the Jakarta governor, who is also president-elect.  The beef market operation's launch was marked by the departure of 10 cars laden with frozen meat to ten traditional markets.
"The meat market operation is aimed at supplying beef to consumers, in the face of the Idul Fitri, or Lebaran festivities. Good quality beef is fairly cheap and most people find it affordable," he said.
The price is relatively low compared to regular prices, being sold for Rp60,000 to Rp85,000 per kg.
President Director of Jakarta's PD Pasar Jaya Market, Djangga Lubis, stated that the meat market operation began on July 24, 2014 and lasted until July 26, 2014.
The beef market operation was carried out in cooperation with PD Pasar Jaya and PD Dharma Raya Hutamajaya. A total of 20 tons of beef carcasses was distributed to all markets in four municipalities in Jakarta.
PD Pasar Jaya Market will evaluate its meat market operation, launched for three days from June 24-26 in 10 traditional markets in Jakarta, according to its spokesman.
"We will evaluate it to see the enthusiasm of consumers and the development of beef prices in a number of traditional markets. This is because now is the final day of the meat market operation in 10 traditional markets," PD Pasar Jaya Spokesman Agus Lamun said on Saturday.
He noted that the evaluation will also determine whether officials might extended the market operations for a period after the post-fasting Idul Fitri holidays.***2***
