Jakarta, May 13 (Antara) - The terror attacks on three churches that left 13 people dead and 43 others wounded in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday were strongly condemned by various quarters.
President Joko Widodo condemned the church attacks and called on the public to remain calm. He desribed the acts of terror as barbarious. "All citizens should remain calm and vigilant," he told a press conference at Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya after visiting survivors of the terror attacks.
"The acts of terror is really barbaric and beyond humanity. It causes the fall of victims from members of community and innocent children," said the President.
Chairman of the Indonesian largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Said Aqil Siradj also condemned the suicide bombing of the three churches. "We condemn all acts of terrorism, whatever the motive and background," he said.
He said all sorts of acts using violence, let alone in the name of religion by spreading terror, hatred and violence, are not Islamic teachings. "Islam condemns all forms of violence, and there is not even a single religion in the world that justifies violence," he said.
NU, he said, conveyed a deep condolence to the families of the victims. Everything that happens is a destiny. He fully supports the efforts and steps of the security forces to investigate quickly and thoroughly the motives that trigger the occurrence of the incident.
Terrorism movement, he said, has become increasingly rampant and requires more intensive special handling from various parties.
The same concern was also raised by the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI). MUI will never tolerate radicalism and terrorism and condemned the terror attacks. "MUI deeply regrets and condemns the terror bombings in Surabaya because this is clearly a very disgraceful act," said Secretary General of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Anwar Abbas when contacted in Jakarta on Sunday.
He hopes that in the future there will be no more similar attacks because the impact is very much, especially on peace and religious unity. The series of suicide bombings took place on Sunday morning at around 7:30 p.m at three houses of worship, the Catholic Church of Immaculate Santa Maria (STMB) on Jalan Ngagel Madya, the Indonesian Christian Church (GKI) on Jalan Diponegoro Surabaya and Pentecostal Church on Jalan Arjuno Surabaya.
The death toll from the terror acts was at least recorded 13 people, while 43 others were injured. President Joko Widodo along with a number of other state reviewed the scenes of the bombing in Surabaya after previously visiting the victim at a local hospital. Jakarta In the meantime Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo strongly condemned the suicide bombings the churches in Surabaya.
"In this situation, we, together with all people, strongly condemn the attacks which the president calls as a barbarous act," Bishop Suharyo said in a statement to reporters at the Jakarta Cathedral church here on Sunday night.
According to the bishop, violence by anyone, by any religion or culture, is not justified because it causes humanitarian calamities that some people refer to as extraordinary crimes.
Despite sadness and anger, Bishop Suharyo invited the whole community to pray for the victims and their families, as well as for the security forces who are still working to investigate the blast in Surabaya.
"I am convinced that the people of Indonesia want to provide support through prayers in different faiths, our innocent brothers who are victims, as well as those who are in the duty of maintaining the security of the people of the state," he said.
The Commission I chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR), Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, has strongly denounced the bomb attacks in several locations in East Java.
"Perpetrators of the bomb attack at the houses of worship in Surabaya showed (they) do not have civility," Kharis said through his written statement, here on Sunday. He also said, every bomb terror acts always leave deep grief for the victims and their families.
"All Indonesian people must unite and build awareness that acts of terror, perpetrators, and people behind them are common enemies of the Indonesian nation," the legislator disclosed.
In the meantime, The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also conveyed its strong condemnation against terrorist acts that targeted Sunday Mass congregations in the three churches in Indonesia's second largest city, Surabaya.
OIC Secretary General Yousef Al-Othaimeen said in a statement on Sunday that the OIC reaffirms its position that violence and terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group.
Violent extremism and terrorism in all its forms and manifestations including violence against civilians and suicide attacks are against the holy principles of Islam and affront to the religious diversity of Indonesian society, the OIC stated.
