INDONESIAN 'GAYO' COFFEE PROMOTED IN US, CANADA

by Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, April 21 (Antara) - Indonesia, the world's fourth largest coffee exporter, continues to promote its coffee products in the global market. One of the coffee products being promoted is the 'Gayo' Arabica Coffee.
'Gayo' is a plateau area in Central Aceh and Bener Meriah districts, Aceh province, in the western tip of Sumatra. Now, producers of Gayo coffee from Aceh Province are promoting their coffee, or Gayo Arabica coffee, in the United States and Canada.
The Gayo Arabica coffee producers are taking part in the Coffee Expo of Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) in Seatle, the United States, from April 19 to April 22 and the Coffee Promotion Event in Vancouver, Canada, from April 24 to April 25, 2018.
The promotions are being facilitated by Indonesia's Trade Ministry and Canada, through Indonesia-Canada Trade and Private Sector Assistance (TPSA).
According to Director General of National Export Development of the Ministry of Trade, Arlinda, the SCA Coffee Expo, the largest premium coffee exhibition in the world, was being held from April 19 to 22, 2018.

"The participation of Indonesian companies in this expo, through the support from the TPSA Project, is expected to have a major impact on the increase in Indonesian coffee exports," Arlinda remarked in a written statement received on Saturday.

Five Gayo Arabica coffee producers, who are partners of TPSA, are taking part in the coffee promotion in the United States and Canada. They are Arinagata Cooperatives, Meukat Komuditi Gayo, Orangutan Coffee Lestari, Organic Cooperative Redelong, and Women Coffee Cooperatives.
Armiyadi of Meukat Komoditi Gayo stated in Takengon, Aceh Province, on Thursday (April 19) that besides the five producer partners of TPSA, the promotional event was also attended by representatives from the Gayo Coffee Protection Society Foundation and the Ministry of Trade.
He noted that this is the second year Gayo coffee producers are facilitated by TPSA to attend the world coffee exhibition, in an effort to increase the export of Gayo Arabica coffee, especially to the Canadian and North American markets.
"In this SCA exhibition, TPSA prepares a special booth for Gayo Arabica Coffee, including taste test equipment as well as promotional materials and opportunity to meet directly with potential buyers," Armiyadi remarked.
He explained that the SCA Coffee Expo in Seattle is the world's largest exhibition of specialty coffee that brings together producers, buyers, and coffee-processing industries from around the world.
"Last year, more than 13 thousand people participated in this event," Armiyadi added.
Meanwhile, the Canadian TPSA Project Manager and the head of the delegation, Said Fauzan Baabud, stated in a press release that Gayo Arabica coffee was selected as the target commodity of TPSA because of its strong potential for export to the Canadian market.
The same statement was made by Director General Arlinda, following the SCA event in Seattle. TPSA will bring the five Gayo Arabica coffee producers to participate in Indonesian Specialty Coffee Expo.
The event will be held at the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center office in Vancouver, Canada, on April 24 and 25, 2018. The Indonesian Specialty Coffee exhibition will link Gayo coffee producers of TPSA partners in Canada with the Canadian coffee industry and importers.
The exhibition is a forum for the exchange of information and promotion of Gayo Arabica coffee and various other Indonesian coffee varieties. Through this activity, Gayo Arabica coffee is expected to be directly exported to Vancouver, Canada.
Gayo Arabica coffee was selected as TPSA's target commodity due to its strong potential for export to the Canadian market. Indonesia ranks sixth as Canada's largest coffee supplier, contributing 5.1 percent to its import market share.
Canada's total market share of imports over the past decade has grown to $320 million in 2006 and $623 million by 2016, with an average annual growth of 6.9 percent.
At the same time, The Indonesian Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) is also promoting the name "Kopi" as a brand of Indonesian coffee in overseas markets through the "KOPI Brand Promotion Road Show" in several cities throughout the United States and Canada.
During the road show, held from April 13 to 24, 2018, the Indonesian delegation will visit a number of leading cafes in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle in the US, and Vancouver in Canada, to explore information about the challenges and opportunities to open and market the Indonesian coffee brand and café brand in these cities.
The business trip is expected to pave the way for the establishment of Indonesian-branded coffee in the US and Canada, and in other countries.
Support to develop the coffee industry in Indonesia was stated by President Joko Widodo, as he commemorated International Coffee Day at the Presidential Palace in Bogor (West Java) on Oct 1, 2017.
The International Coffee Organization ranked Indonesia as the world's fourth coffee exporter in 2016-2017, with 6,891,000 packs of coffee (1 pack = 60 kilograms), or about 413.46 million kilograms, being delivered to countries throughout the world.
