Jakarta, Nov 30 (Antara) - All parties, including social organizations, legislators, and the media, need to support the economic development being carried out by the government in Papua, which is an underdeveloped province in eastern Indonesian region.
Hence, various circles, such as social organizations, politicians, and the media, should support the efforts of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in developing various infrastructure facilities in the Indonesian easternmost province.
The mass and social media should play their influential role in building the people's optimism and nationalism regarding the development in Papua.
According to Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi, a member of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the Golkar Party Faction, the massive infrastructure development being carried out in Papua portrays the efforts of Jokowi's government in advancing and developing the mining resource-rich province.
The legislator stated that the construction of the 4,330-kilometer-Trans-Papua Highway (that connects Papua with West Papua), bridges, airports, and dams is proof of the massive infrastructure development that would change the face of Papua and boost its economic activities in the coming years.
"The Jokowi administration has been building massive economic infrastructure in Papua, such as the construction of trans-Papua roads, the development of electrical energy, the sale of fuel in a single price program, and the construction of roads on the border areas. The government¿s strategies to carry out developments in Papua should, of course, be supported by the media, so that the development in Papua would be accomplished well, "Rizaldi remarked.
Media coverage should build public support for industrial activities, state management, and stability of the region in Papua. In addition, media coverage should foster mutual trust, peace, and mutual respect in Papua, the Golkar Party politician stated.
The efforts of Jokowi should be appreciated. "We have acknowledged that our party (Golkar) did not support Jokowi in (the presidential race in) 2014. But we have to admit that a lot of things have been done by the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla government. Up to now, Jokowi has visited Papua six times. The funds allocated by the government for Papua is also big," Rizaldi noted at the Press Council building in Central Jakarta on Monday (Nov 27).
Rizaldi was speaking at a discussion, organized by the Social Media for Civic Education (SMCE), under the theme: The Role of the Media in Building Optimism and Nationalism, in Papua. Researcher Adriana Elisabeth of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and Hariqo Wibawa Satria, the Executive Director of Komunikonten, took part in the discussion.
"We must understand the history of Papua, without which we cannot talk about Papua. They are our brothers and sisters and not anyone else. Therefore, LIPI had proposed a national dialogue related to Papua, aimed at providing understanding with each other. Of course, we want Papua to stay within the limits of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) forever," Elisabeth explained.
In fact, she added that Jokowi has appointed three people who are given the mandate to facilitate dialogues. "Therefore, there has been progress, and it is an improvement. Hence, in addition to developing infrastructure that deserves appreciation, the government has also been taking the dialogue avenues," Elisabeth remarked.
Related to the role of the media, she explained that LIPI, along with the Press Council, continues to coordinate in creating conducive climate for dialogues. "The media clearly has an important role to play, raising the results of development in Papua, no matter how much progress has been made. Advantages and disadvantages need to be reported for use as a means of consideration for making improvements," Elisabeth revealed.
In the meantime, Hariqo Wibawa Satria explained that the publication to support the development of Papua should not always be in the form of conventional media, such as print media, TV, and radio. At present, social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others, are also very effective in building public opinion.
"Nowadays, everyone can help disseminate news and promotions that support the development of Papua. One can produce photos, videos, and text messages that are positive for Papua and could be disseminated to the social media. Many potentials of Papua, from natural resources, tourism, mining, and fisheries, can become news content on social media," Satria asserted. .So far, the trend of news and publications on Papua in the media is about the independence issue. Many producers raised the independence issue as the content of their social media. And the government usually acted only on how to extinguish the 'fire.' "Ideally, the government and citizens of Indonesia need to proactively disseminate the positive content of Papua news and build optimism and nationalism in Papua," Satria added.
Elisabeth added that in order to help Papua disseminate its positive aspect, the media should know Papua and its problems better. "So far, we have seen people who are not familiar with Papua, both in terms of its history, including their recognition of Papuan heroes. People know Papua simply because of the separatist and tribal conflict," Elisabeth noted.
