Jakarta, Oct 11 (Antara) - Indonesia's annual five-day trade expo (TEI) 2017, which was opened by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in BSD City, Tangerang, Banten Province, on Wednesday, has set a transaction target of US$1.1 billion.
Indonesia has invited Middle East countries and other nations to take part in the 32nd trade event, as part of the efforts to achieve the target.
The expo, which is attended by business delegations from different countries, such as Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Cambodia, will showcase products by at least 1.1 thousand exhibitors.
The TEI is an annual trade exhibition organized by the Trade Ministry to introduce various high-quality service products and export commodities. The trade expo also highlights Indonesia as a destination country for international investors.
According to Jokowi, Indonesian products must be able to penetrate non-traditional markets in Africa, Eurasia, the Middle East, South Asia, and South America, among others.
Therefore, the president urged Indonesian embassies overseas to identify products in demand that Indonesian businessmen could meet. Indonesian embassies overseas have intensively promoted TEI 2017.
The promotion was also carried out by Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Jordan. "Jordanian businessmen are expected to participate in the TEI in Jakarta from Oct 11 to 15, 2017," Marsudi noted during a bilateral meeting with her Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, at the office of the Jordanian Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The Indonesian Embassy in Amman has made various efforts to increase the presence of accredited state entrepreneurs in the activities of TEI. It had hosted a business dinner themed "Promoting Trade and Investment in Remarkable Indonesia" on Sept 18, 2017, which was attended by some 160 businessmen from Jordan and Palestine.
"Some 80 Jordanian and Palestinian businessmen have confirmed their presence in the 2017 TEI," Indonesian Ambassador to Jordan and Palestine, Andy Rachmianto stated.
At the 2016 TEI, two Jordanian importers, namely Al Essami Co. for Investment & Trade Ltd. and Al Bushnaq Trading Co, were bestowed the Primaduta Award 2016, with 58 other overseas companies. Al Essami Co. for Investment and Trade Ltd. is one of the largest Jordanian companies that import Indonesian wood products such as plywood, block board, and Medium-density fibreboard (MDF), with an average value of $10.4 million per year from 2012 to 2016.
Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Jordan in 2016 had only equaled the previous year's value of some $256 million.
Indonesia's export value to Jordan in 2016 had amounted to $90.2 million, while the value of Indonesian imports from Jordan had reached $165.8 million. This resulted in a deficit of about $75.6 million.
The Indonesian embassy has also made its efforts to promote TEI 2017 in Saudi Arabia. The Economic and Trade Team of the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Jeddah has since July this year promoted the biggest trade event in Indonesia. The team visited all the trade offices in the accredited regions of the Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah.
At least 93 business groups from Saudi Arabia have registered with the KJRI to attend the TEI 2017. "The interest of Saudi entrepreneurs to cooperate with their Indonesian counterparts is high. This is evident from the increase in number of delegates who have registered with the KJRI to attend TEI 2017," Agus Muktamar, the economic affairs officer at the KJRI Jeddah, remarked.
At the same time, more than 700 Nigerian enterprises have signed up to participate in the TEI.
In response to the enthusiasm of the Nigerian businessmen to participate in the event, the staff at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Abuja continued to process business visit visas for Nigerian businessmen to enable them to attend the TEI.
"All the staff of the Embassy of Indonesia in Abuja have been assigned to process visas for Nigerian businessmen. They are working even on holidays to process the visas for the sake of the success of the 2017 TEI," Indonesian Ambassador to Abuja Harry Purwanto stated in a press release received in Jakarta on Friday (Oct 6).
He revealed that the TEI was an excellent event to increase Indonesia's non-oil exports to various African countries, especially Nigeria, which has a population of 180 million. The potential transactions of the Nigerian delegation's visit during last year's TEI event have amounted to $129 million. The Indonesian Embassy in Abuja is expecting the number to increase this year, in line with the improving economic situation in Nigeria.
At least 24 business delegates from Cambodia have registered to take part in the 32nd TEI. According to the Indonesian Embassy in Phom Penh, through its press statement received in Jakarta on Friday (Oct 6), 24 Cambodian businessmen, who are potential buyers for increasing the volume of trade between the two countries, would participate in the event.
The 24 Cambodian entrepreneurs departed to Indonesia on Tuesday (Oct 10) and would return to Phnom Penh on Oct 14. The Cambodian businessmen have not yet conducted business activities with their Indonesian partners.
Therefore, the Indonesian embassy in Phnom Penh will facilitate the Cambodian businessmen during their stay in Indonesia, especially during their participation in the TEI 2017.
Last year, the TEI had recorded trade transactions amounting to $974.76 million, or Rp12.7 trillion. It further increased to $1.02 billion following trade deals after the expo, or an increase of 12 percent as compared to those in 2015.
Hence, this year, the biggest Indonesian trade exposition is expected to conclude a trade transaction worth $1.1 billion. ***3***(A014/INE)EDITED BY INE/H-YH
