DEVELOPING RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR ELECTRICITY

by Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Sept 14 (Antara) - The government has begun to intensively exploit its friendly, new, and renewable energy (EBT) source to generate electricity, as part of its efforts to achieve its 23 percent energy mix target by 2025.
The government has signed 11 Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), through state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, on Friday last week to procure energy for its electricity with Independent Power Producers (IPP), with a total capacity of 291.4 megawatts (MW).
The signing of the PPA constituted a continuation of a similar agreement signed on Aug 2 last month, with a capacity of 257.17 MW, bringing the total capacity of power from renewable energy sources signed by PLN with IPP to 548.57 MW. But this excluded the capacity of electricity from the geothermal power sector.
Besides the PPA agreements concluded by the PLN with the IPPs to produce environment-friendly energy for electricity, the government has also signed other agreements, through the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), with its partners.

The agreements were signed after the official launch of an IndoEBTKE ConEx 2017 event held to promote the use of renewable energy in Jakarta on Wednesday (Sept 13).
ESDM Minister Ignatius Jonan, during the event, encouraged the development of new and renewable energy (EBT), so that it will have more competitive edge in terms of economic viability.
In his speech, at the event held in conjunction with Bali Clean Energy Forum (BCEF) 2017, Jonan explained that the event was in line with the government's efforts to promote new energy, renewable energy, and energy conservation (EBTKE) as a source of energy for the future.
After all, Indonesia has the goal to achieve its energy mix target. "The government has agreed that the energy mix target should be achieved based on conditions that it is (EBT) economically affordable. I am sure that in the future, EBT prices will be competitive," Jonan remarked.
The government is targeting that by 2025, the energy mix derived from renewable energy sources (EBT) would be  23 percent. Jonan noted that the government was consistent to continue to maximize the economic utilization of EBT based on this commitment.
According to the minister, there are three things that must be met in accordance with President Joko Widodo's explicit directives, namely the availability of electricity supply, distribution, and affordable prices.
Jonan acknowledged that this year, the government has intensively increased access to energy and supply reliability throughout the archipelago by increasing the electrification ratio and energy capacity in the new and renewable energy/EBT sector.
After all, there had been an offer to build a marine power plant in the Larantuka Strait, East Nusa Tenggara, he added. "I told them that a price of 16 cents/kWh of renewable generated electricity would be unaffordable, but if it is below 10 cents/kWh, it could be negotiated. The price should be checked and calculations should be made technically and technologically. It turned out that yesterday (Sept 12), they came back and offered a price of 7.18 cents/kWh. If the (price) is 7.18 cents/kWh for a plant of 25 MW capacity, I can guarantee that state-owned electricity firm PLN will buy it," Jonan asserted.
Earlier on Friday (Sept 8),  PLN signed 11 power purchase agreements (PPA)with  renewable energy generating companies.
"The signing of the agreement reflected the determination of the government to meet the energy mix target  with renewable energy making up 23 percent in 2025 and to create a competitive and affordable power price," Jonan noted.

He said the prices of the power generated by the 11 renewable energy generating plants range from US$6.52 to US$8.60 per KWH," Minister remarked. .
The 11 power generating plant using renewable energy sources are;  PLTM Aek Sibundong (8 MW) in North Sumatra; PLTM Aek Situmandi (7 MW) in North Sumatra; PLTM Aek Sigeaon (3 MW)   in North Sumatra; 4. PLTM Sisira (9,8 MW)  in North Sumatra; PLTM Batang Toru 4 (10 MW) in North Sumatra; PLTM Bayang Nyalo (6 MW) in West Sumatra;  PLTM Batu Brak (7,7 MW) in Lampung;  PLTM Kunci Putih (0,9 MW) in Central Java; PLTA Air Putih (21 MW) in Bengkulu;  PLTA Pakkat (18 MW) in North Sumatra; and PLTA Buttu Batu (200 MW) in South Sulawesi.
During the IndoEBTKE ConEx 2017 event, several Memorandum of Understanding related to the development of the new and renewable energy and energy conservation/EBTKE were also signed between  the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation and partners.
The directorate general signed the MoUs with the Board of Directors of the Indonesian Real Estate Company's Association On Solar Photovoltaics on the New Building Roof of Housing; the signing of funding cooperation for the development of a geothermal working area/WKP between PT. PLN and PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) on the Cooperation in the Development of Geothermal Working Area/WKP; research cooperation, development and utilization of geothermal resources between the University of Indonesia, Gajah Mada University, Bandung Institute of Technology, Trisakti University, PT PLN, and PT Geodipa Energi; signing of cooperation between the Research and Development Agency of the ESDM Ministry with China National Petroleum Corporation on Acceleration of Energy and Mineral Resource Development in Indonesia.
The geothermal power plants/PLTPs are to be developed in six Geothermal Working Areas/WKPs assigned by the  government  to PLN. They have  a total capacity of 160 MW with an estimated total project value of US$640 million.
In addition, there is preparation of funding facilities for the following WKP assignment up to 14 WKP, with a total development capacity of 1000 MW.
IndoEBTKE ConEx is an annual event organized by the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation in conjunction with the Indonesian Renewable Energy Society (METI).***3***(A014/INE)EDITED BY INE(T.A014/A/BESSR/A. Abdussalam) 14-09-2017 21:43:
