Jakarta, June 3 (Antara) - President Joko Widodo visited Aceh, Bangka Belitung, West Kalimantan and Gorontalo this week to inaugurate power plants in seven provinces as part of the government's efforts to implement its 35 thousand megawatts electricity development program.
These power plants are in different provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Bangka Belitung, Lampung, West Kalimantan and Gorontalo with a combined capacity of 754 megawatts (MW).
The 754 MW electricity projects are part of the efforts to achieve 35 thousand MW power production target. The government is planning to develop and complete all these plants by 2019. If successful, it will enhance the nation's current electricity generation capacity from some 50 thousand MW to 85 thousand MW by the end of 2019.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the new electricity plants will help overcome the problem of power shortage and outages in the country.
"One solution to overcome power shortages in districts and cities is to build PLTMG," Jokowi stated while officiating a 184-MW compressed natural gas-fired power plant (PLTMG), located in the premises of Perta Arun Gas company, in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, on Thursday (June 2).
Adequate electricity supply is of vital importance to help develop industries in the regions.
"When the local government constructs a power plant, I believe the industry in Aceh, particularly Lhokseumawe, can be developed better as investors will become interested," Jokowi observed.
President Jokowi hoped that the Special Economic Zone in Lhokseumawe of Aceh Province will continue to see development with the construction of additional power plants.
Jokowi argued that the area should be revived because PT Kertas Kraft Aceh, PT ASEAN Aceh Fertilizer and PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda are in Lhokseumawe and can help in improving the area's economy.
Most of Aceh's electricity demand would be met by the newly officiated power plant, General Manager of state-owned power utility company PT PLN, Aceh branch office, Bob Saril explained. "The territorial coverage is from Banda Aceh to North Sumatra," he revealed.
The president quoted the PLN president director as saying that it took three months to build PLTMG, and only six months for the generator engine. The same amount of time was taken to build the PLTMG in Bangka Belitung Province, he added.
This Wednesday (June1), President Jokowi arrived at the Depati Amir Airport of Pangkalpinang City, Bangka-Belitung Province for the groundbreaking ceremony of a 350 megawatt power plant.
Jokowi conducted the groundbreaking ceremony of the 350 MW Mobile Power Plant in Air Anyir Village, Merwang Sub district of Bangka District, which will supply electricity to the Sumatra area.
"The target of 35 thousand MW electricity production should be realized by any means, otherwise complaints of outages will continue," the president underlined in his speech while inaugurating the regional electricity generation project in the form of Mobile Power Plant (MPP) on Wednesday.
President Jokowi stated that the target to make provision for 35 thousand MW of electricity production must be realized to support Indonesia's economic progress.
The power plants where groundbreaking ceremony was conducted by the president are scattered in various other provinces with a combined capacity of 350 MW. They included 2x25 MW plant in Bangka, 1x25 MW MPP in Belitung, 3x25 MW in Paya Pasir Medan in North Sumatra Province, 1x25 MW in Nias (North Suamtra), 3x 25 MW in Aur Duri, Riau Province and 4X25 MW power plant in Lampung Province.
"I would also ask not to focus only on ground breaking ceremonies. I will make sure that this process is completed. Besides, the people should also keep an eye on the project," the president exhorted.
During his tour of West Kalimantan, the head of state also officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of an MPP power project and the operation of another one with a combined capacity of 120 MW.
They were a 4x25 megawatts MPP project for West Kalimantan and a steam power plant (PLTU)with a capacity of 2x10 MW.
Jokowi hoped the two MPP projects in Mempawah, whose construction was begun in May 2016, would be finished and commence operations in September 2016.
On the occasion, Jokowi ordered revival of neglected power plant projects, amid electricity supply scarcities in a number of regions. "I have come here in Mempawah this afternoon because I heard that there is a mobile power plant (MPP) project which has been lying neglected for about 7 to 8 years. Work on the project should be continued and completed," President Jokowi ordered while inaugurating the power plants in Menpawah, West Kalimantan, on Thursday (June 2).
The president revealed that the neglected MPP project had a planned capacity of 2x50 MW and its construction was paid for through a Rp1.5 trillion fund.
"Before I come here next, I want to make sure that the 2x50-MW MPP project is completed. I could not imagine that Rp1.5 trillion have been spent and even then the project is not ready. All problems must be solved and this project should be completed this year. The state-owned electricity company PLN's president director has promised to finish it this year," Jokowi added.
He also noted that besides the 2x50 MW MPP project, there were two other MPPs whose construction had been neglected for different reasons.
"I will surely check it out or will send officials to have a look at it. I usually visit a site when I see there is a problem. This is about funds that belong to the people and the state," the president reiterated.
He pointed out that power consumers' main complaint in all the provinces is frequent power outages. "This should be resolved. I will constantly follow the developments in the efforts to achieve the 35 thousand MW electricity production target," the head of state promised.
"Household consumers will also benefit. If we do not respond to their complaints, it will be a big mistake," he stressed.
During the last leg of his tour of four provinces, the head of state arrived in Gorontalo Province on Friday. He inaugurated a 100-MW Paguat gas power plant (PLTG) in Pohuwato District in the province.
The Paguat PLTG, with a production capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity, is also part of the government's plan to generate 35 thousand MW of additional power.
The total power capacity of all the electricity plant projects the president commissioned in his tour of the provinces is 754 megawatts, scattered in seven provinces across the country.***3***(A014/INE)EDITED BY INE(T.A014/A/BESSR/A. Abdussalam) 03-06-2016 23:22 |
