RI CONSERVING ENERGY THROUGH EFFICIENCY MOVEMENT

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, May 17 (Antara) - Indonesia has, over the past few weeks, launched a national movement for energy saving to cut power consumption in the country by 10 percent and save Rp43.2 trillion in the coming three years.
"Many people still consume energy in a wasteful fashion. Let us accustom ourselves to consuming energy efficiently at home, in offices and any other places," Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said told the press on Sunday (May 15).
Minister Sudirman made the remarks during a fun walk in Jalan Thamrin, Jakarta's  business and office district. It was meant to popularize the energy saving drive. The fun walk was from the office building of the ministry of energy and mineral resources to Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle.
The 10-percent Energy Saving National Movement was launched last month to encourage energy conservation to help save Rp43.2 trillion, an amount equal to the cost of  constructing a 32,000-megawatt steam-powered electricity plant.
The movement will be focused on 12 provinces, namely Jakarta, West Java, Banten, Lampung, East Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta,  North Sumatra, South Sumatra, South Sulawesi, Bali and Riau.

About 90 percent of national electricity supplies are consumed in the 12 provinces. "With the 10-percent energy saving movement in the 12 provinces, the government hopes it would economize some 17,411 GWh, equivalent to saving Rp43.2 trillion with which a new  32,000-MW steam-powered electricity plant can be constructed," noted Sudirman.
According to Farida Zed, the director for energy conservation of the directorate general of new and renewable energy and energy conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the movement can yield big economic gains and people participating in it will directly feel the benefits.
"For households, customers will see lower electricity bills. On an average, household customers who have joined the movement can save Rp200,000 to Rp400,000 per month," Farida Zad said.
The campaign for 10-percent Energy Saving National Movement was launched in an effort to change the wasteful behavior of the people in consuming energy.
Sudirman said that energy can be saved through three ways, namely by turning off electricity if a gadget is not being used, using energy saving electronic appliances and making energy saving a life-style.
"One of the ways of saving energy is setting the air-conditioners at 25 degrees only when they are used," the minister said.
The Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), based on an energy audit result, mentioned that if the industrial and household sector carried out the energy saving drive, it can actually mean there will be no need of building a power plant of 6,951-MW capacity for the coming one decade.
"The result of the energy audit by the office of the Energy Conservation Technology (B2TKE) of BPPT meant that the government could save Rp190 trillion required for the construction of a new coal steam-powered electricity plant," Andhika Prastawa, the head of the B2TKE, told a media gathering last month.
The efficiency figure is also contributed by economizing the use of coal which has so far continued to decline by 32 million tons per annum, equal to about Rp16.5 trillion. This excludes external cost that could be reduced, such the risk of air pollution from steam-power plants, that can result in costs of about Rp2.4 trillion.

Therefore, the government, according to Minister Sudirman, is resolved to launch the energy saving movement.
He said the campaign started from Jakarta and would be gradually expanded to 20 big cities in Indonesia.
The 20 cities are Medan of North Sumatra, Pekanbaru of Riau, Batam of the Riau Islands, Padang of West Sumatra, Palembang of South Sumatra, Lampung of Lampung, Jakarta, Bogor of West Java, Depok of West Java, Tangerang of Banten, Bekasi of West Java, Cilegon of Banten, Bandung of west Java, Yogyakarta, Semarang of Central Java, Sidoarjo of East Java, Surabaya of East Java, Denpasar of Bali, Makassar of South Sulawes and Balikpapan of East Kalimantan.
It will also be carried out through various print and electronic media, airlines, trains, banners and brochures. "The campaign will not stop until the end of this year. It will continue until the people understand and become efficient in consuming energy," the minister added.

He said that the increasing energy consumption and the shrinking of fossil fuel reserves required the people to become aware of the importance of saving energy and reducing consumption.
"Ahead, energy conservation itself should serve as the fifth source of energy after oil, gas, coal and renewable energy," Sudirman stressed.

The 10 percent energy saving movement is a joint action that involves the government, business players, societal organizations and individuals.
He said the campaign would continue to be echoed through dissemination of energy saving labels and the use of energy saving electricity appliances.
Based on data with the state-owned electricity company PLN, the energy sold to consumers in 2014 totaled 200 terawatt hours (TWh), of which 93 percent or 187,175 TWh were consumed by household subscribers, industries and businesses.
Sudirman said his ministry has also issued a ministerial regulation on Energy Service Company (ESCO). It is a partnership between the government and the industry to realize energy conservation.***3***(A014/INE)DITED BY INE
