PEOPLE WARNED AS DENGUE SPREADS IN NUMEROUS REGIONS

By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Jan 30 (Antara) - In the current transitional period from the dry to the rainy season, dengue fever, which is caused by Aedes aegypti mosquito bites, has since early this month spread in many regions across the country.
The government has not revealed the exact number of deaths but has warned people of the endemic dengue fever threats, and has asked the health service offices in the regions, people and families to prevent the spread of the disease.
The Aedes aegypti mosquitoes could be eradicated, in among others ways, by cleaning their nests and the environment by applying the 3M mosquito eradication method. The three acts of eradicating dengue are drain open tanks, cover clean water, dispose unused water containers, according to Health Minister Nila F Moeloek.
She expressed hope that each family would become an eradicator of mosquito larvae because the number of health officials in the regions was limited, so that the participation of the people was badly needed.
Eradication of wigglers by each members of the family was very easy because it could be done by conducting the 3M method during the rainy season, Nila said. The government, in this case the health ministry, has also ordered all of its regional health service offices to conduct prevention efforts.

"With these efforts, we are convinced the chain of Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding could be cut off," the minister said, and added that the breeding often occurred in school bathrooms because during the academic holidays schools often forget to clean the bathtubs.
Health officials at hospitals or public health care centers who found dengue fever patients should provide medication immediately to avoid fatalities, she said.

After all, in the current transitional season period, the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes could breed significantly and spread quickly, she said.
The maximum number of dengue fever victims were found in Gorontalo, Bulukumba (South Sulawesi), Luwu (South Sulawesi), Damas Raya in West Sumatra and in South Kalimantan, the minister said.

"However, I do not remember the exact number of victims because I have not brought the data with me now. We apologize to the media because we could not yet provide data on the number of patients," the minister stated.
However, a number of regions have released data to Antara on the figures concerning dengue fever victims in their areas such as South Kalimantan, South Sumatra, Riau, Jambi and East Java.
In Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, the number of patients who have died from dengue fever has increased from eight on Monday, last week, to 11 on Tuesday (January 26), a local health official from South Kalimantan Province stated.
Head of the Health Service Office of South Kalimantan Province Achmad Rudiansjah remarked Wednesday that his office had received a report on the increase in the number of victims who died of dengue fever.
Most of the victims, with the count reaching three, who died of dengue fever spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, were from Kotabaru District, he revealed.
One victim each died in the districts of Banjar, Barito Kuala, Talah Laut, and Tanah Bumbu, in addition to Tapin, Hulu Sungai Utara, Hulu Sungai Tengah, and Hulu Sungai Selatan.
The total number of dengue victims until January 26 this year stood at 838 patients. This year, the number of patients is yet smaller than the figure reported in the same period last year, which stood at 1,180 patients, of which 15 died, according to the health official.
In Lubuk Linggau, South Sumatra, the local health office declared the dengue break as an extraordinary event. Head of South Sumara Health Service Lesty Nuraini said in Palembang (South Sumatra capital city) Thursday that the extraordinary event was declared as the number of victims had increased drastically.
In January 2016, the number of victims reached 148 in Lubuklinggau alone. In the same month of the previous year there had been only 11 victims. The number of dengue fever patients in January 2016 in South Sumatra province reached 586, of which nine died.
In Riau province, four patients suffering from dengue fever had died in January, 2016, while the disease had affected 273 others, according to the Health Service Office of Riau Province.
"Since early January (2016), 277 people have suffered from dengue fever, and four of them have died," Rozita Rossi, coordinator of the Media Center of the Health Service Office of Riau, stated here Monday.
Of the dead victims, three were from the District of Kampar, and one hailed from the Pekanbaru Provincial Capital City, he noted.
Of the 277 reported cases, Siak had the highest number of patients with 83, followed by 58 in Pekanbaru City, 54 in Kampar, and 28 in Indragiri Hulu, apart from 24 in Kuantan Singgih, 13 in Pelalawan, nine in Hulu, and eight in Dumai.
"Most of the patients came from the district of Siak, but cases of fatalities were reported in Kampar," he revealed.
However, the regional government of Riau Province has yet to declare the dengue fever outbreak as an extraordinary event.
In Jambi province, the health office has registered 398 people who have contracted the Aedes aegypti mosquito virus in the January 1 - 23 period of 2016. Three victims died.
"Of the 398 patients, three died," Head of Disease Eradication and Health Environment Section of the Health Office of Jambi, Kaswendi said.
Dengue fever has also affected the people in East Java. For instance, some 75 of the 271 villages in Tulungagung, East Java, have been identified as dengue fever endemic areas following the high number of reported cases of the viral disease in the region.
During the past three years, the authority had been continuously finding cases in the 75 villages, Head of Disease Prevention and Environment Restructuring of the Tulungagung Health Office Didik Eka stated last week.
"A neighborhood was said to be an endemic area if any case of the disease was found consecutively in the last three years," Eka explained.
The number of dengue fever cases increased in areas, such as Tulungagung, Gondang, Kaliwadir, and Bandung, in addition to Kampurdarat, Ngunut, Rejotangan, Ngantru, and Karangrejo.
To prevent the viral outbreak, the local authority had been conducting socialization programs and adopting preventive measures such as fumigation to fight the spread of Aedes aegypti mosquitos, which are the carriers of the dengue fever virus.
However, it was not easy to increase people's awareness regarding preventive measures, Eka revealed. Dengue fever cases were also found in the other 136 villages, but they were not classified as dengue fever endemic areas.***4***(A014/INE)(T.A014/A/BESSR/A. Abdussalam) 30-01-2016 19:04:
