POLICE CRACKING DOWN ON THUGS OF MOTORIST GANGS

  By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, May 20 (Antara) - The Indonesian Police are cracking down on motorist gangs who have recently committed thefts, robberies, attacks, and rapes and spread unrest among the public in a number of regions in the country.
The police have set up special teams to arrest thugs of motorist gangs where they often operate such as Jakarta, Riau   and South Sulawesi provinces.
"We have established a special team to take firm actions against motorist gang members who have caused security problems for the society," Deputy Director of Traffic Management of the Jakarta Regional Police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Sambodo, said over the weekend.
Sambodo said that Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Putut Eko Bayuseno had ordered his men to crack down on every motor gang member involved in illegal street racing or crimes.
So far, the police have only ticketed those involved in illegal street racing. "Now, we would confiscate their motorbikes and send suspected thugs to court," Sambodo said.

Illegal street racing has the potential to trigger criminal acts such as theft with violence and brawls between gang members.
The Jakarta Regional Police has recorded 10 cases of crimes, such as abuse and ganging up of victims and theft with violence, committed by motorist gang members since last year (2012 - 2013).
The latest case befell Kompas Television journalist Harko Setiono (24) who was beaten up by thugs of a motorist gang in Jembatan Goyang, Jalan RE Martadinata, Sunter Agung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta on May 12, 2013.
In April 2012, around 200 motorcycle thugs assaulted and robbed people of their belongings in seven different spots in North and Central Jakarta during the early hours, leaving eight people injured and one dead.
Based on the data released by the Commission of Missing People and Victims of Violence (Kontras), during the early hours   on April 13, 2012,  there were shooting incidents against private Sugeng Riadi of the Navy's Pharmaceutical Institution and private Akbar Fidi Aldian of the Airborne Battalion Infantry 503 of the Army's Strategic Command.
Sugeng was shot in the right ear, while Akbar was shot in the chest.
On the same day, a civilian named Anggi Darmawan (19) died after being badly beaten up by about 200 motorists in Jalan Pramuka, East Jakarta.
State Intelligence Agency chief Let Gen Marciano Norman said police must find links of criminal actions by motorist gangs in various regions.

"I have said that the links of actions of the gangs of motorists from one city to another should be investigated, because their actions always came up simultaneously," Marciano said, believing that the motives behind the actions are crimes.  Crimes and violence must not be left unresolved, he said.
"I think seeing what they have done, as you have seen on television recently, some criminals might have been involved in their activities. Their goal is only to create disruptions everywhere," he said last Friday.
Recent incidents of thugs' crimes in the region also took place in Riau and South Sulawesi provinces. Members of motorist gangs in these provinces committed crimes without hesitation such as thefts, assaults and rapes of victims.
In Riau Province, the police special team has arrested at least 10 members of motorist thugs and confiscated at least 40 motorbikes believed to be belonging to motorist criminals.
"We have been launching operations over the past few days. In our operations on Saturday and Sunday (May 18 - 19, 2013), we confiscated 40 motorbikes," Senior Commissioner Adang Ginanjar, the chief of Pekanbaru City Police Headquarters, said on Sunday.
He said the police team still continued to launch its operations to anticipate the brutality of motorist thugs. Many of them are believed to be still hanging around the city, even though police have arrested their notorious leader, Suardirejo alias Klewang (57).
Klewang was arrested in his hideout in an old building of  PT Waskita Karya, Riau¿s main stadium complex, on Thursday last week.
Besides involving in street criminal cases, Klewang was also reported to have raped four young girls since 2011.
"Based on testimonies of a number of Klewang¿s men who have been named suspects, Klewang have committed rape crime against more than  one victim," Commissioner Arief Fajar Satria, the head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Riu City Police Headquarters,  said on Sunday.
He said that one of Klewang¿s victims had reported to police that he had raped her. The victim said she was raped by Klewang in turn with his men in the stadium complex.
"Three other rape victims did not report to police, however," Arief said.
In the meantime, South and West Sulawesi Regional Police have also set up a special team to crack down on thugs of motorist gangs in the region.
"We have set up a special team to arrest members of motorist gangs who spread unrest in the public. We are concerned over the incident which befell journalists who were   hit by a dart and stabbed by thugs of a motorist gang," Senior Commissioner Endi Sutendi, the head of Public Relations of South and West Sulawesi Regional Police said in Makassar last week.
Members of a motorist gang maltreated Harun, a journalist of Fajar TV. He was hit with a dart let loose by the criminals.  His friend journalist Muhammad Ardiansyah alias Endy of Trans TV was also maltreated by the gang members in Jalan Urip Sumoharjo on May 9, 2013.
At that time, according to Endy, he and his friend Harun were returning to their offices when they came across with the gang members. The gang members armed themselves with daggers, arrows, catapults, and home-made firearms.
"We have grilled four witnesses and we have seen a clear indication on the perpetrators of the crimes against the journalists," Senior Commissioner Endi Sutendi said.***2***
