RI TO BOOST ROLE OF ENTREPRENEURS

 By Andi Abdussalam
Jakarta, Nov 13 (ANTARA) - In an attempt to boost economic growth and increase employment, the government has plans of increasing the number of entrepreneurs in the country, which currently stands at 1.56 percent.  Considering that entrepreneurs are the key drivers of the economy, the government has plans to increase the number by 5 million in the next ten years, or by 500 thousand every year.
"From 2015, we will increase the number of entrepreneurs by 500 thousand a year, so that in 2025, the number of additional entrepreneurs in Indonesia reaches five million," the BI governor said in his keynote address at the opening of the Global Entrepreneurship Week, on Monday.

According to a World Bank survey held in 2008, entrepreneurs in Indonesia accounted for only 1.56 percent of the country's total population. The total population of Indonesia in 2010 stood at 237,641,326. This means that there are about 3.7 million entrepreneurs in the country at present.
This number is not sufficient since entrepreneurs play an important role in creating job opportunities.
"When jobs need to be created in certain sectors, it is the entrepreneurs who will help in reaching that goal. And when there is a requirement for a certain product, it is the entrepreneurs who will lead innovation efforts. It is important to note that Indonesia is in dire need of more entrepreneurs," said Indonesia¿s Vice President, Boediono, during the global entrepreneurship week event.

For this purpose, the vice president urged private firms and banks to organize entrepreneurship training programs to increase the number of entrepreneurs by around 500 thousand every year.
"I appeal to the training providers from the various sectors to work together and build synergy in a communication forum to achieve the common goal of developing entrepreneurship on a national scale," said the vice president.
Boediono said that entrepreneurs are the drivers of change and innovation in Indonesia. They play an important role in economic development. They are badly needed to bring change and innovation in various sectors.
However, he pointed out that there are several challenges that people face when developing entrepreneurs. These include business regulations, business security, infrastructure and macroeconomic stability.
Darmin Nasution, BI governor, said that Indonesia has been enjoying economic stability for the past few years, with an average economic growth of about 6 percent. Entrepreneurs could now take advantage of the high consumption in the country.
"Indonesia's economic growth in the past five years has been relatively stable. The stable growth is supported by an increase in consumption by the citizens. Entrepreneurs could take advantage of this growth," he said.
Moreover, in the last three years, most of the foreign investments have been oriented towards meeting domestic demand.  "It is not for exports because the world economy is slowing down," the BI governor said.
"The relatively high economic growth of 6 percent has been supported by the high domestic consumption and investments. Since the level of domestic consumption is increasing, we predict that entrepreneurs will be able to take advantage of the situation," Darmin said.
According to the BI governor, stable national economic growth is an important factor for developing and building entrepreneurship in Indonesia.
Besides, investments are also predicted to take over the role of public consumption as the main driver of economic growth. But the shift from consumption to investments will not affect the growth of entrepreneurs as most of the investments are still directed to meet the domestic demand.
"Right now, public consumption is still dominant, but in 2013, investments will have a bigger contribution than other sectors. Hence, investments will be the dominant sector," Chief Economic Minister, Hatta Rajasa, said recently.
The government's expectation about this shift in the driver of economic growth, from public consumption to investments, was also echoed by the Finance Minister, Agus Martowardojo.
The investment sector will serve as a source of economic growth in 2013. "In 2013, it will be the first time that the source of economic growth will come from investments, whose contribution will exceed that of public consumption," asserted the finance minister.
The prediction of steady investments and consumption will also help boost the economic growth in 2013, which will exceed this year's target of 6.5 percent.
In the 2013 state budget, the government and the parliament agreed to set the economic growth at 6.8 percent and inflation rate at 4.9 percent.
Therefore, the BI Governor, Darmin Nasution, was certain that the number of entrepreneurs could be increased. So, by 2015, the number of entrepreneurs is expected to reach about 10 million.
This is a great leap forward, which will result in robust economic growth for Indonesia.
Even the State-owned Enterprise Minister, Dahlan Iskan, has predicted that Indonesia's economy will grow and it will even exceed the economic growth of Spain.
He said that Indonesia's economy could defeat Spain next year, given the present economic development in the country.
"We defeated the Netherlands last year. Next year, Indonesia could possibly be ranked seventh or eighth, and as a result, defeating Spain," asserted Dahlan, on Monday.
He predicted that in the next 15 years, Indonesia's economy could experience an extraordinary growth, similar to what the New Order government had experienced.  However, in the next 15 years, the character of economic management would differ from that of the New Order government.
During the New Order government, the economic benefits were only enjoyed by a small number of people, but in the future, the economic benefits will be shared among the people of the country, because there would be no one to control the economic cake allocation.
"In the past, the big economic cake could only be enjoyed by certain people. In the future, the person who controls the cake division will not exist," Dahlan said.***2***
